Seaforth U6 Panthers v Seaforth Killer Whales
Pelé once famously described football as "The beautiful game." Had the Brazilian great happened upon Condover pitch last Saturday morning he may well have changed his mind. Because the match between the Panthers and the Killer Whales was not beautiful; it was much, much more than that. It was joyful, it was uplifting and it was overflowing with the exuberant innocence of youth. This was the game that proved that football truly is the game of love.
It was a crisp dewy May morning, under an impossibly blue sky. A soft-focus mist descended on the ground as the teams ran onto the pitch. One could almost hear the distant strains of Burt Bacharach songs carried on the gentle breeze. The early morning sunlight softly kissed the surrounding treetops, illuminating the pristine blonde ponytails and dazzling white smiles of the Killer Whales' girl players. As one swooning Panther mother eagerly pointed out, even the referee contributed to the loveliness of the scene, apparently bearing some resemblance to Hugh Grant. Clearly, love was all around us.
Early in the first half Daniel and Lloyd staged a love-in, spending quality one-on-one time chatting to each other with their backs to the action. Lily entertained with a beautiful solo effort which was saved by the Whales' goalie using a rarely seen ballet movement to stop the ball with her fully outstretched leg. Gabriel then had an attack on goal which was saved and Lily hit the woodwork. In the tenth minute Conor gave the ball a whole lot of loving, with a stunning dribbling exhibition, ending appropriately with his first ever goal. Conor's joyous, bouncing post-goal celebration was matched only by his mother who had a joyous, bouncing celebration of her own on the side line. A few minutes later Torben, standing just inside half way, caressed the ball with such passion that it shot straight past both teams and into the goal. 2 - 0 to the Panthers at half time.
The love affair continued in the second half with William, Lloyd and Harry romancing the ball with some fine defensive play. Lily in goal made some exquisite saves and executed a number of gorgeous goal-kicks back to the half way line. Wiley showed some form with a number of handsome runs and was unlucky not to score with a solid attempt. Daniel meanwhile spent time chatting up Abbey, an old girlfriend, who was playing for the Whales. Time stood still as they gazed at one another, enraptured, oblivious to events around them. Torben then choreographed some delightful runs. With out-stretched arms and pointed toes, he ran and pranced like a young Nureyev. Gabriel was so moved by the beauty of the game that he started skipping. He skipped away from the ball, he skipped away from the other players and he kept skipping down the full length of the pitch, pausing only briefly to smile at the appreciative crowd as he passed joyfully by.
2 - 0 to the Panthers at full time.
When asked what he would do during retirement, Pelé said, "I'll be teaching young people around the world to play soccer. I believe soccer can unite all the peoples of the world. Soccer can fill the world with peace and love. Through soccer we can all be brothers. Soccer has one real goal - to create friendships." It seems that in the end the great man got it right. After all, football is not merely a game, it's much more important than that.
Well done Panthers and well done Killer Whales. Pelé would be proud of you.

Seaforth U7 Seals vs Forest/Killarney Seagulls
Great start to the game with Seagulls giving the Seals a good run. Ben C made many attempts to keep the goals out however the Seagulls were too strong and managed to slip one through.
Nick V, Nic C, Todd and Liam had a great game and did not stop defending. Philip, Ben V, Matt and Will were exhausted with trying to keep up. Well done boys.
Second half found Liam in goals. The Seagulls were determined to score and only slipped one goal in out of many attempts. Great effort Liam. Ben C was ready for a run after being in goals and seemed to take over giving his brother a run for his money.
The Seals were clearly playing their best game this year and loving it. Matt warmed up and helped with some fantastic defending. NicK V had control of the ball a few times which helped out the team. Philip did his best running ever. Go boy.
Final score was 2-0 to the Seagulls. Thanks for a great game guys.
Mascot went to Nic C.
Players of the Match went to Ben C and Philip. Great effort.

U7 Pittwater Blue Bottles v Seaforth Bandits
Another great effort by the Bandits, even though the score ended in a 10-0 win to the Blue Bottles, there was never a moment where they looked defeated.
Great chasing and excellent defence by Lucas, James, Isaac, Georgie and the ever reliable Ryan.
The second half found Milly Claudia and Tobias playing a fabulous game!!!
Well done team

Seaforth U7 White Pointers vs CC Strikers
Yet another gorgeous sunny day at Seaforth Oval.
Coach Greg was away this week so our Team Manager, Libby, kindly stepped into the role.
Our full team was playing with Marlow volunteering as goal keeper for the first half. Marlow did an amazing job & didn't let a single ball into the goal area despite numerous attempts from a great attacking opposition. Turbo Tom was on fire in the first half with many attempts at goal & on his 3rd attempt a terrific goal, this was his first of 2. There was also great attacking in the first half by Sam, Lucie & Ethan and Will just missed out on scoring a goal.
In the second half Ollie was goalie, a favourite position of his, & he managed to save 5 great attempts but unfortunately the CC Strikers came out re-energized after half time to score 3 goals. Charlotte & Eliza proved to be valuable midfielders & Tom excelled at defence.
All up it was a very close game with much excitement. I'm thrilled to say it was CC Strikers first win of the season so a big congratulations to their whole team.
Player of the day was Turbo Tom – great attacking & defence & of course our 2 goals.

Seaforth U7 Crows Vs BTH Raider Foxes
The opposition looked fit and formidable when the starting whistle blew.
George Campbell immediately burst from the midfield and shoots for goal, shaving the goal post and missing by the narrowest of margins. Alexander delicately back flicks the ball for Alex G who does a penetrating run up field but is brought down short. Finlay takes the ball from midfield to the penalty box passes to George who shoots - GOAL (1-0). The dust had hardly settled when Alex G has a strike from outside the penalty box - GOAL (2-0). Will and Zac controlled the midfield, giving the opposition very little ball to work with.
A huge goal kick by the opposition is trapped by Callum who takes on the defense, offloads to Jacob who slots a sweet shot - GOAL (3-0). The two Alex's combined once more, with Alex G finishing like a professional - GOAL (4-0). Lily spots the free space in the forward line and power passes down field for Callum, who is always ready to pounce, he shoots - GOAL (5-0). In the dying moments the Crows defense tires and an outside shot hits the back of our net - GOAL (5-1).
The Golden man trophy went to Alexander and the mighty crow to Alex G.
Once again a great effort by all and super coaching by coach Gary.

Seaforth U8 Panthers v Pittwater RSL Geckos
Result: Seaforth won 3-2
A very close first half saw enthusiastic striking by Max who scored 2 goals off cross passes from Tom and Daniel. Jasper had a narrow miss when his skimmed the goal post.
Barney and Asher were solid in defence, and Shahill carried out 2 brilliant saves as goalie. The score at half time, 2-2.
The second half saw great attacking bursts from Jack, a brilliant goal from Jasper, a near miss from Shahill and some good saves from goalie Daniel.
A great result for super coach Gavin and his band of Helper Dads. Well done.
Man of the match: Daniel

Seaforth U8 Leopards vs Collaroy Strikers
It was a beautiful sunny day for the Seaforth Leopard's match.
Although Collaroy Strikers scored an early goal Kieren was quick to match them with a great goal shortly afterwards. The Seaforth Leopards displayed great team work. Clearly all their hard work is paying off.
Bailey continued his strong defence skills keeping the ball away from the Seaforth goal with some very big kicks and fancy footwork. Nicholas also successfully stopped a few near goals. By the end of first half the score was 1-1.
Early into the second half there was an exciting corner for Seaforth followed by a few near goals, a great header from Bailey and great defence from Jaidon, Emerson and Jack. William went like the wind with the ball taking a few fearsome tumbles, but immediately standing up as if nothing had happened!
Some great cooperation between the players: actually calling out each other's names and doing some great criss-cross passing. Eventually Max managed to get the ball to the goal and scored to the excitement of all. It seemed as if the game would be won by the Seaforth Leopards but at the 11th hour the Collaroy Strikers got a goal.
The game ended a few moments later as a draw - 2-2.
It must be said that this was probably the best match all season for the Seaforth Leopards from the point of view of working together as a team and their show of endurance.
Great work Leopards!

Seaforth Ladies 12/3 Stingers V Pittwater Panthers
Result: Seaforth Stingers 4 Pittwater Panthers 2
At Seaforth Oval, 27 May 2007
The Stingers escaped with the points with another solid display right across the park on the coldest morning of the season so far. But the Panthers gave our girls a very good run for their money, and surprised with two goals in two minutes late in the match to underline how close it was.
The Stingers began brightly and applied all the early pressure. There were opportunities right across the forward line, but the keeper was up to the task in the early stages. Two good shots were well-saved, but the Stingers were in control. Gia, Emily D., Lauren and Clare were terrific at the back, shutting down every sniff of a Pittwater raid and feeding a hungry forward line, and the first goal finally came mid-way through the half. The ball came in from a corner, Bec was strong on the ball before passing to Claudia, who made no mistake from close range.
The second goal was sensational. Emily D. set off on the edge of Seaforth's goal square, sprinting up the left-hand touch until she was deep into Panther's territory. A lovely ball into the middle found Georgia, who drilled a nice cross into the box. Xenia was on the spot, and she scored from point-blank range.
She was on the score sheet again early in the second half. This time, Emily F. brought the ball up all the way up from the back with a scything run. Another lovely cross into the middle, and Xennie once again converted from close in.
3-nil, but Pittwater was far from finished. The first goal came from a goal-mouth scramble, after the Stingers failed to clear the box. 3-1, and it was 3-2 only seconds later. Another scramble, and the Panthers scored again from close range.
The Panthers at this stage lifted a gear, and began to out-enthuse the Stingers. But Emily D. put a stop to that with an elegant right-foot shot from close range, once again after solid build-up work through the mid-field. 4-2, and the full-time whistle followed shortly afterwards.
Once again, the Stingers put in a good performance right across the park. The back-line functioned well (apart from a couple of blemishes); Amber, Cheyenne, Bec and Imogen were creative in defence and attack, and Xenia, Claudie and Amber were busy on the ball. But the memorable moments came courtesy of our two mighty Em's, who produced long-distance runs that created goals at the right time. A top team effort once again, and we'll be better for the run.

Ladies 14/1: Seaforth V Avalon
SUNDAY 27/05/07
With two great winning performances in the last two weeks, Seaforth were confident of at least a point from an unbeaten Avalon side.
Beautiful sunny weather greeted everyone for the 11:30 kick off and it was great to see Sarah in the starting line up, arriving prior to competing in the 'Balmoral Burn Fun Run' – there's dedication for you.
Avalon were having most of the possession but Seafoth, with Holly looking her usual confident self in goal, were holding their own.
Seaforth broke through the opposition ranks on more than one occasion but were thwarted by a solid Avalon defence.
As Avalon started to press a little harder, they were rewarded when our back four were caught a little flat, with a goal just before half time.
Seaforth had to improve but were dealt a massive blow in the first minute of the second half when the referee failed to spot a deliberate hand ball by Avalon. Our players stopped (it was clearly obvious what happened) resulting in Avalon scoring their second goal - sorry ref. but you just killed the game.
The game continued and with Avalon gaining in confidence and Seaforth losing their shape, the home side punished us with two more goals before the end.
Final score 4 - 0 Avalon.
This was not one of your better games girls but give credit to a good Avalon side. Unfortunately we were on the receiving end of some dubious decisions by a refereeing performance that 'Blind Freddy' would have embarrassed with.

Seaforth U6 Seals V CC Strikers
WOW!! What a difference a week can make.
This week the Seals looked a new look team. Playing well in attack and finding plenty of space, as well as backing up in defence and helping support the keeper.
Both teams were evenly matched this week and the result could've gone either way.
The first half got off to a solid start and the second half we seemed to find another gear. Charlie was one of our outstanding players this week with some blistering attack, which he capitalised on with a goal in the second half. Louis was also impressive in goals and made some great saves amongst the mud bath around him.
It was great to see Kara, Harry and Tristan make some great defensive tackles to assist the keeper and help get the team on the attack again. Aidan and Corrine had plenty of attacking runs and are starting to control the ball better and it will only be a matter of time before they start scoring goals.
Well done Seals, what an impressive game this week. Your mud sodden shirts prove that you got involved and helped your team mates.

Seaforth U6 Panthers v Beacon Hill Eagles
Normal service was expected to resume this week, with the return of Coach Haslam fresh from a top-secret fact-finding tour of Chinese under 6 sporting institutions. Surely with these newly gained mystical coaching techniques, his guiding hand would ensure that the Panthers continued on their steady, winning course. Or at least, so one might think. However, under 6 football, like life, rarely goes to plan.
Questions have been asked of the Panthers in prior matches. But the first half of this week's game against the Beacon Hill Eagles saw the Panthers asking questions of themselves and of their coach. Although customarily strong in defence, thanks to solid work by Conor, Lloyd and Harry, the Panthers seemed to have lost much of their sting in attack. Previous fluid attacking manoeuvres, kick-and-run displays and precision mid-field passing were all but distant memories, with the Panthers forgetting to chase after the ball after it had been kicked. Many attacking opportunities were lost with the players stopping once they had made contact with the ball to acknowledge the applause of spectators. Some of the Panthers were taking so much care addressing the ball that on-lookers could almost hear cogs turning as their legs wound-up to kick. Lily and Gabriel, the team's top scorers to date, also seemed to have lost their verve. Thanks to some good saves by Daniel in goal the scores at half time were locked at nil all.
Questions had to be asked over the half time oranges. What was wrong with the Panthers? Could it be that the players were starting to doubt their own abilities? How could their coach stop the malaise? Would facing their own demons prove to be the biggest test of all?
As the second half commenced all the Panther parents could do was hope that Coach Haslam had brought some ancient Eastern motivational secrets back in his hand luggage. But all hope appeared to be in vain when in the fourth minute Johnny, the Eagle's flamboyant blonde striker, ran unchallenged down the length of the pitch, held the ball up sufficiently to tease Gabriel out of the goal mouth, and then fired the ball past him to the back of the net. One - nil to the Eagles.
The Panthers needed a hero; they needed inspiration. Fortunately they didn't need to look very far. Cometh the hour, cometh the five year old. For out of the shadows stepped Torben, a player who had promised much in earlier games, and he took it upon himself to reignite the Panthers. Reignite them he did. His positive, attacking play was more contagious than a Chinese air-conditioner. Soon all of the Panthers had become so infected that the remainder of the second half was played deep within the Eagles' half. Gabriel, in goal, might as well have gone to the beach for the rest of the day, because his services were not called upon again. In the sixth minute the Eagles' goalie, apparently mesmerised by the dramatic reversal of form, passed a goal kick straight to Torben who returned the ball, with interest, directly into the goal. One all!
A period of stunning teamwork followed with Conor, Wiley, Harry, William, Lloyd and Daniel all shifting up a gear. A number of fine chances hit the woodwork and the Panthers forced several corner kicks. One notable corner by Lily shaped through the air as if it had been struck by Beckham and was then trapped by Torben with pin-point accuracy. The Panthers had numerous scoring opportunities in the remainder of the half, many of which missed by the narrowest of margins. Despite the almost suffocating presence of Eagle parents lined up behind their goal, all shouting differing positional instructions at their offspring, the Panthers found a hole in the defence to score the winning goal the dying minutes, courtesy of lightning fast strike off Torben's right boot.
Final score: 2-1 to the Panthers. Congratulations Panthers and well played Eagles.

Seaforth U7 Seaforth White Pointers V Wakehurst Leopards
Today we travelled to Hews Parade, Belrose.
The team took the field with Marlow in as goal keeper. We started off with fantastic defence by Tom and Sam. Lucy took the ball down our end with great skill only to have it taken from her. Then it was Ethan's turn to take the ball down and have a shot at goal but just missed.
Wakehurst kicked the ball out of our goal but Tom was too fast for them and stopped the ball and turned it around to score our first goal. The game continued with great defence kicking from Sam. Wakehurst had many attempts to take the ball into their goal area but our team were too strong in defence with Lucy and Eliza not allowing them to get anywhere.
Wakehurst finally had an attempt at goal but Marlow was too quick and a goal was saved. Marlow did a big kick right up to our end and Oliver showed his ball skills by taking the ball up to our goal where Lucy had an attempt but was unlucky.
The first half continued with Will coming on and showing his fine ball and falling over skills. Half time 1-0.
The second half we had Oliver in as goal keeper, a position he loves and is extremely good at. Ethan took the ball down and had an attempt at goal but just missed the corner. Eliza was all over the field chasing those Leopards down and not letting them get near their goal.
Big kicks from Sam, great running with the ball from Marlow, a goal saved by Oliver and amazing playing by Will were all highlights of the second half. A great throw in by Ethan to Tom led to another goal for the White Pointers.
Will had set himself up beautifully to score a goal but unfortunately tripped and was robbed of the chance. The game ended with Tom scoring his 3rd goal to secure our win 3-0.
A great improvement every week from the whole team.

Seaforth U7 Seals vs Brookvale Eagles
Everyone was keen for a run and and we thank the Brookvale Eagles for giving us a good game.
The first half was tough and we were feeling tired. The Seals kept the ball away from the goal and helped support Todd in goals. Nicholas C was on fire and nothing could slow him down after many attempts to score a goal he slipped one in. Well done. Ben V got into some action and helped Ben C keep the ball away from the Eagles.
The second half found Ben V in goals with Liam now firing into action with some big kicks. Todd took a bit to warm up and Matt, Will and Philip trying their best to keep the Eagles from scoring.
Final score was 1 Nil to the Seals. Great game guys.

Seaforth U8 Dragons vs Curl Curl
Team Dragon played... well, like a team. And it paid off handsomely with a 6-2 score at the end of the 2x15mins of gametime.
Whether it was for Scott as the ultimate beneficiary of a Hugo-Liam combination to score the 1st goal or for Carl and Liam swapping favours to create opportunities for each other in front of the goals, our young players embraced the spirit of the game with more fervour on a picture perfect autumn day.
Individual performances did also contribute to the final score. Dylan was pugnacious in attack, Jared ubiquitous in mid-field and Kolia practicing the slide tackle on every possible occasion.
Curly had their moment too with their main striker opportunistically pushing the ball inside the nets on a couple of occasions to tie the score twice in the 1st half.
Parents were quite happy to see that their kids had plenty of fire in their belly.
But that goes without saying in a team of Dragons!

Seaforth Ladies 12/3 Stingers V Forest Killarney
Result: Stingers 3 Forest Killarney 0
At Melwood, 20 May 2007
It was a beautiful morning up at Melwood, and it was matched by the great teamwork displayed by the Stingers. This was not a game characterised by individual brilliance: this was a game where the 12 young ladies showed how much they have stepped up as a team.
Seaforth began brightly, and Xenia opened the scoring after five minutes. Gia provided the lead-up with a jinking run down the right before she passed to Belle. A short ball found Xennie unmarked, and the goalie had no chance from close range.
But the home team fought back strongly, and the Stingers found themselves under sustained pressure. They were camped in their own half for the next 10 minutes by a team that decided it could be just as busy and creative on the ball, but our backline of Bec, Lauren, Cheyenne and Clare kept denying the Forest forward line.
The goal was another fine team effort. Amber pounced on a ball out from the back, and fed the forward line. Half a dozen players touched the ball as the Stingers swept towards the goal, and Emily stepped up to convert with a trusty left foot. 2-nil, and we kept the heat on until the half-time whistle, with Belle, Gia and Amber all going close.
Seaforth got away to a super start in the second half. Georgia was out of goal and in the forward line, and she led from the front. Our ladies piled on the pressure and began raining shots on goal. One hit the woodwork before Claudia stepped up and scored from close range after a miscued goal kick.
3-nil, but back came Forest and they split Seaforth wide open with a splendid end-to-end run on a counter-attack. Composure at the back through Imogen, Clare and Xenia thwarted that raid, and another soon afterwards ended the same way, but the Stingers realised they couldn't relax. Certainly that was a luxury denied the Forest goalie, because she was under siege. Twice more we hit the woodwork, and she was called on to save a snap from Belle late in the game.
All in all, a solid effort from the Seaforth Stingers who showed real team-work today. They thoroughly deserved their win, and the margin could have been a lot greater, but we did enough against a gritty opponent to earn the points. Well done, ladies.

Seaforth Ladies 14/1 v Curl Curl
20/05/2007
Football supporters had some options on Sunday morning. Watch the two 'so called' best teams in England contest the FA Cup, or rise early and watch the Seaforth Ladies 14/1 (or do both).
The girls started well with some great attacking play from both Lisa and Kellie on the wings. Chances were created but not taken - was it going to be one of those days?
Although there was sustained pressure from the girls, Curl Curl took the initiative and with a good counter attack took the lead just before the mid point of the first half.
1 - 0 Curl Curl.
Our attacking play didn't change and 10 minutes from half time a 'cracker' from Georgia from outside the box brought Seaforth level. Even 1 - 1.
The second half started as the first, with Seaforth attacking but chances not taken. However the pressure told and from a corner on the left, Astrid volleyed home a sublime shot into the right hand corner of the net to put Seaforth ahead for the first time in the match. Seaforth 2 - 1.
The game now took on a different look, Curl Curl having to attack to find that equalizing goal.
Our defence was being tested but with Olivia looking very confident in goal and Nina 'sweeping up' everything in her way, it came of no surprise when Kellie chasing a through ball that their goalkeeper failed to hold, nipped in for number three.
Seaforth 3 - 1.
Sweet revenge for that first game against Curl Curl.
Congratulations girls on a great performance - your work rate was superb.
No doubt Ian's training is starting to pay off.
For those who decided to watch the FA Cup, better luck next time.

Seaforth U6 Seals V Curl Curl Roosters
A tough match this week, with the Curl Curl Roosters showing a lot of skill. But our team certainly showed improvement and kept trying until the end.
Our most outstanding player this week was Corrine, with some good attacking runs. Goal keeping was a tough job this week, but Harry and Charlie were magnificent under fire. Kara and Tristan helped in defence with some good clearances that helped get us on the attack. Adam and Aidan were also strong and showed some good skills and speed.
Although a tough game this week our Seals can hold there heads high as they showed plenty of enthusiasm and lots of improvement.

Seaforth U6 Hawks vs Curl Curl Strikers
This was another game where the Hawks started strongly and went on to dominate the game, and was a great way to welcome Michael, our newest team member.
Inside the first minute Byron found the back of the net, then Eddie scored two in quick succession to have the strikers under pressure. Stirling scored his goal with a powerful strike past the keeper after seeing some earlier good shots go wide. Byron scored his second after a long, controlled dribbling run, and then Jay gave a clever pass, which Wayne slotted home. Jay was rewarded for his excellent ball control and passing with a fine goal to finish the half.
The second half saw the Hawks applying the pressure and bombarding the Strikers 'keeper who did well to keep the early shots out. Michael was working hard to free the ball and put players into space, and when Ben saw his chance he scored well from long range. Jordan relished being released from goalkeeper, and was in everything in the second half, never giving the Curl Curl players any time on the ball.
Plenty of Hawks players were unlucky not to score, hitting the posts or having shots well saved by the goalie. Wayne scored his second goal after a long dribbling run, and Eddie finished the game with his third goal of the match.
Most impressive is the way we are sharing the goals around, passing the ball and working hard in defence. Well done, for one of the best games of the season so far.

Seaforth U6 Magpies vs Mosman Anacondas
The Magpies welcomed a new international signing this week - David all the way from Johannesburg. And David was in the thick of it from the first minute as he debuted in goal and did his best to hold back a strong start from the Anacondas.
The Magpies were slow to get going, playing as though they'd all been out to a big Wiggles concert the night before and had overindulged on the Ribena.
In a physical encounter the Anacondas dominated the first half, scoring four unanswered goals. Coach Simon must have shaken them up at half time though, as the Magpies played with more purpose after the break.
Freddy, Dane, Calum and David all went close until finally Dane got the Magpies on the board with a fine run from deep. But the extra physical strength and raw grit from the Anacondas was not to be deprived, and they ran out 7-1 winners, not counting a stylish late goal for the Magpies scored by David, ruled out controversially by the ref who claimed the final whistle had gone 20 seconds earlier.

Seaforth U6 Echidnas V Narrabeen YC Rockets
Score - 2 Rockets 0 Echidna's
Another good game by the Echidna's. They are really getting the hang of the team thing now and all players tried really hard.
Josh our first half goalie saved 3 goals. Bailey was our second half goalie and was fantastic in stopping anything that came close to a goal. He saved several sure goals and was our man of the match.
Allan as always was running all over the field trying to penetrate the defence. This week he was ably helped by Olivia and Josephine. Gregor was great in defence, as was Ruby. Mya was off this week but will be back with us next week.
A little bit of 'trash talk' from the opposition surprised this team of 5 and 6 year olds (and us parents), but nothing could take away from a good team game by the Echidna's

Seaforth U6 Panthers v Curl Curl Eagles
The Seaforth Panthers this week were without their coach and his son Lloyd, last week's winner of the most improved trophy. The coaching duties fell to me. I knew that to keep the team's winning streak on track I would have to keep a tight hand on the reigns. I asked the team to warm-up by running around the goal and back to me. Instead they ran straight past the goal and kept running before collapsing in a distant giggling heap. I arranged them in a line for goal-kicking drill. They wandered off to pat a nearby dog. I reminded them of the fundamentals of positional play and asked for volunteers for each position. All eight players volunteered to be the reserves. It seemed, like a fine thorough-bred, the Panthers had sensed that they had a novice in the saddle.
Having established who was in charge I left the team to their warm-up. At our allotted pitch, instead of finding our opponents, I found the Curl Curl Peacocks (who were expecting to play a marsupial of some kind or other from Mosman). At that moment, opponent-less and surrounded by bedlam, it seemed unlikely that I would be offered the stand-in coaching position next season.
Belatedly the Curl Curl Eagles arrived and the match was ready to start; or at least it would have been had the referee (drawn from the ranks of the Eagles' support team) remembered to bring his whistle. Eventually a whistle was found and the match got under way.
Clearly the Eagles were a well-drilled team who were not shy of a bit of rough and tumble. Conor deprived them of an early opening goal with some outstanding sweeping defence. The Eagles then mounted a number of multi-phased attacks on goal. Despite great defence from William, they snuck a ball just passed Harry in goal to open the scoring. Undeterred, the Panthers came back with some good attacking play, including fluid forward passing between Daniel, Wiley and Torben. Gabriel struck form with a couple of near misses and another strike saved by the Eagles' goalie. He was eventually brought to earth by a push in the back. The Panthers were unlucky not to score from the ensuing penalty. It fell to Lily to score an equaliser in the twelfth minute. Torben and Conor defended well to see out the first half with the scores locked at one all.
The Panthers took the lead three minutes into the second period with a lovely goal by Lily. Gabriel came off temporarily for a hug after he received another push in the back in front of an open Eagle goal. The Panthers were again unable to get past the 5-Eagle wall in the resulting penalty. Levity returned to the match shortly afterwards when Harry used his bottom in a novel but effective defensive display and the pitch was invaded by two friendly local dogs. The second half also saw a number of fine saves by Torben in goal, some strong kicks from Wiley, Daniel and William and top-notch defence from Conor.
It eventually became apparent that the absent-minded referee had not only lost his whistle, but had also lost his watch and lost track of time. About 20 minutes into the 15-minute second half the bewildered ref looked to the Eagles coach, who it seems was also the official time-keeper, who surprised all present when he announced that there was a further minute to play. Several minutes later, with the Eagles unable to score an equaliser, the referee brought an end to extra time.
Final score: 2 - 1 to the Panthers.
Congratulations Panthers on the way you played and for reminding us that giggles are more important than goals and that dogs are much more interesting than some silly old coach.

Seaforth U6 Killer Whales vs Narrabeen Apollo
Final Score: 7-1
Our first Win... Yay!!!! Way to go Killer Whales.
With Sophie as our team Captain for the week, we got off to a fantastic start. Abbey was our goalie in the first half and did not see much of the ball as all the action seemed up the other end. Rosie & Sophie were in fine form scoring 2 goals each with Hannah adding another to give the mighty killer whales a 5-0 lead at half time.
By the Second half we were really fired up. Campbell was goalie and had another strong game protecting the net only letting 1 goal through. Rosie and Sophie again were able to put the ball past the opposition goalie.
On top of this Abbey, Abbie, Piers and Sarah all attacked the goal with vigour but unfortunately no luck.
Player of the Match went to Rosie.. well done, great effort!
Tom was away sick... we missed you Tom, may the Killer Whale force be with you!

Seaforth U7 White Pointers v Curl Curl Roos
The Whitepointers were invincible this week. Charlotte and Lucy set the pace by tackling hard and dominating the ball for most of the first half. Lucy even tried a netball move on the Roos (hands!!!). The girls, supported by a very speedy Will Crisp, made sure the ball was in the right spot for Sam to skillfully score the first goal. Then just as the ball was heading back down the field a well placed header from Ollie put it straight back in the right direction for Marlow to move in and score goal number two.
Tom woke up in the second half and scored the next three goals with the help of Ethan (great tackling). Eliza was there for the team when the Roos did get possession of the ball making several very cool saves and wasting no time in booting the ball straight back up the field to the rest of her team mates.
The final score was 5-0 to the Whitepointers.
Marlow Hurst: Man of the Match... and very well deserved, a great goal, great ball control and great tackling.
Who put the rocket fuel in the Whitepointer's water bottles?

Seaforth U7 Seals vs CC Strikers Van Basten
Beautiful day to play Soccer and the Seals had a great start with some players looking a little tired.
William did an amazing job in goals and had plenty of team support. The first half was certainly Nicholas C half with full control of the ball at most times. Plenty of running by all team members and we were looking forward to half time.
The second half found the Seals with Nick V in goals and still plenty of action. Nic C kicked out first goal and shortly after Ben C kicked his.
Not for the faint hearted this half but Liam, Todd, William and Matt sparked up and helped support their team with some great moves. No stopping Nicholas C and he went and scored another goal. Todd not wishing to miss out on the action also slipped in a goal. Ben V had a good go at trying to scroe a goal and Philip was a great defender. Well done Seals.
Final score was 4 nil to the Seals.
Players of the match went to Nicholas Campbell, Todd Smith and Ben Campbell for scoring our goals. Mascot to Philip.

Seaforth U7 Possums Vs Forest Killarney Swans
POSSUMS WON 5 - 1
The Possums woke to an unseasonally warm May morning. A slightly late start allowed the Possums more time to prepare for the big game. Supercoach Russell & Manager Green (with coffee in hand as usual) turned up looking for field 3.
The waft of Dencorub in the air led them to where the win was about to commence. As each member of the team received their "new" jumpers they grew about 12 inches. Green & Russell got the team together and they practised dribbling, shooting & passing. Meanwhile parents discussed goings on around St Cecilia's .
First half was 1 - 0 to the Possums. Chloe, Imogen & Ceili took the ball up to the all girls team, passed and created havoc, while Bella, Sophie & Ciara were relentless in supporting their team-mates as they moved the ball towards the goals. Jack and Pat combined well to rattle the opposition then shoot a goal half way through the half. Forest were rattled and never recovered from the team work and intensity of the Possum's attack.
Josh turned up a little late and shattered the Forest team with his decisive runs from half way. How good was Zoe in defending goals and keeping Forest scoreless? Even better was her father, Adam, who held the goal post up the entire first half and never relented with his support of his daughter.
At half time, Super coach and Manager Green got the Possums into a huddle. The Possums listened as they consumed kilos of oranges and litres of water. They could sense a win in the air.
Second half began with a blast. Forest were shell shocked as the Possums began to take over the game. Zoe, Imogen, Sophie, & Ciara rattled the opposition with their team work, passing and determination while Jack, Josh & Pat peppered the goals.
Chloe and Ceili ensured the ball stayed at the scoring end of the field despite Ceili taking a knock to the head and a lump growing by the minute. One did get away and Forest scored their 1st goal of the season. The Ref fell to his knees in joy (also their coach) but was quickly brought back to earth as Pat slammed 4 goals into the back of the net.
As Pat was shooting goals, Bella sang us a few tunes and her father, Peter, sat by her side oblivious to his daughter's high notes. BRING IT ON BELLA.
Great team effort from the Possums, as they worked together for a convincing win to put them at the top of the table (almost). Well done to Patrick who was named our Possum Player of the Match.
See you next weekend at Seaforth oval for yet another win.

PRE MOTHERS DAY SMASH!
Mothers Day was on the horizon. What were nine 6-7 year olds going to give their mums?
Maybe a goal? There were 5!
Maybe a win? Yes 5-0!
Maybe a display of excellent teamwork? Well the Mighty Crows certainly did that.
There were some very proud mothers (and fathers and grandparents and others...) who noticed the Crows "superb play" and great passing.
Jacob, Alex G, Callum and George all scored goals. Finlay got the ball down to the forwards with some great runs.
Alexander M and Jacob were both great as goalies, neither of them letting one ball through to the net.
William did an amazing job getting the ball from the opposition and had a great shot at goal, only to have the Lionhearts goalie get in the way. Zac displayed excellent teamwork and passing and was really unlucky not to score after his shots at goal.
Lily as usual gave it her all. Looking fab in her contact lenses (that deserves a round of applause!), she passed and she ran and she never gave up.
Player of the match: Jacob
Keeper of the Mighty the Crow: George
On behalf of the Mothers, thanks for a great game of football and the best mothers day present which was happy kids.

WHAT DOES IT SPELL?
GOANNAS!!
What a fantastic game played by the Goannas last Saturday against the Avalon Tiger Sharks! Everyones' hearts were racing, as the Goannas scored their first goal and victory was dwelling in the air! Could this be
their first winning match?? Only time would tell...............
As the Goannas continued to play, without any subbing, the heat was gradually taking its' toll on the boys but sheer determination and the consistent positive support and encouragement given by the parents standing on the sideline, mind you some couldn't take the overwhelming pressure that just maybe this could be the Goannas' first win! How's the heart Jeremy?!!!!!
The Goannas' finally proved what they are made of! Even though some decided that maybe a "tea-break" was in order just before the end of the 2nd half!
Our two goalkeepers Nicholas and Jake did a fantastic job keeping the ball out of the Tiger Sharks reach each time it managed to find its way there! Great job boys! Peter, Noah, George and Riley kept the pace up defending and keeping the ball away from the opposition!
All the boys aimed for the goal many times when opportunity was there and our two winning goals were scored by Noah. Riley showed some fanastic speed and footwork that knocked us parents off our feet! A sudden spurge of energy showed Riley at his best!
It was a fantastic game played by all!
Hip Hip Hooray on your 1st win Goannas!

Seaforth Ladies U12/3 Stingers V Wakehurst
Result: Seaforth Stingers 1 Wakehurst 1
At Seaforth Oval, Mothers' Day, May 13 2007
Our young ladies kept all the mothers (and fathers) thoroughly entertained in a bright and free-flowing game on a lovely morning at home. The 1-1 scoreline was an accurate reflection of the match: Wakehurst dominated the first half, but the Stingers were right on their game in the second, and were a little unlucky not to win.
Wakehurst set the tone early. The Stingers coughed up a free-kick in the first 60 seconds, thanks to a back-pass to the keeper, but our wall was strong and the shot was denied. However, Wakehurst just stepped up a gear, with good passing from the back, feeding some very speedy wingers and forwards. Imogen, Belle, Claire and Lauren helped goalie Rebecca stop raid after raid but Wakehurst was looking much more likely and a goal soon came. The ball arrived in the box from a throw-in deep on the right, and one of the snappy Wakehurst forwards gave Bec no chance. 1-nil, and the visitors were looking very good right across the park. In fact, it could easily have been 2-nil right on half time, but Bec used her legs to stop a rocket.
There must have been plenty in the half-time pep-talk and fruit, because the Stingers came out with all guns blazing in the second spell. Suddenly, it was Wakehurst under pressure, thanks to some long through balls from our back line and our mid fielders.
Our equaliser came after some terrific work on the ball, deep in Wakehurst territory out on the right. Emily Fowler (who later copped a ball right in the face) beat several players before laying on an inch-perfect cross to Xenia, who made no mistake with an elegant right foot from fairly close range. 1-all.
Wakehurst came roaring back, and for a time they were camped in the Seaforth goal mouth. But our young ladies took inspiration from a couple of terrific saves from Georgia, and suddenly we were putting all the heat on. Claudia was denied twice by good keeping, and fired a rocket wide, and Bec's blistering shot hit the post, as the Stingers pushed forward in search of the winner. We always seemed a chance, right to the end, but great goal-keeping (and the whistle) beat us.
All in all, a very exciting game that could easily have gone either way. On balance, the Stingers perhaps deserved the win after dominating the second spell, but we had to settle for a share of the points. Well done all round, and hugs and kisses to all the mums.

Seaforth Ladies LA12/1A v CC Strikers
Ladies U12 Division 1 - 13/05/07 at Seaforth Oval (Kick-Off - 08.30 am)
Seaforth Ladies LA14/1 v Pittwater
Seaforth were looking to capitalise on their draw with Wakehurst last week with another solid performance against Pittwater.
The play was fairly even in the first 10 minutes with both sides showing good attacking skills. With our back four looking particularly effective it was no surprise that the midfield and forwards started to gel. This gave Lisa the chance to score with a suberb low shot midway through the first half. 1-0 Seaforth.
Seaforth were pushing for a second goal early in the second half and Lisa again duly obliged with a sweet strike into the right hand corner of the net. Looking good. 2-0 Seaforth.
This spurred Pittwater into action and with sustained pressure managed to bring a wonderful save from Sarah only to see the ball drop into the path of one of their forwards who had the easiest task of reducing our lead. 2-1 Seaforth.
Seaforth had more chances to improve our goal difference in the remaining minutes but finally ran out worthy winners 2-1.
Great performance girls and a great present to all the Mums.

Congratulations to the Echidna’s. OUR FIRST WIN. 2 goals to 1.
As we are starting to see some great team action, all of our players were stars this week. Allan scored our two goals whilst Josh in defence saved 4 sure goals. Bailey was strong in defence, hassling those Strikers for the ball. Gregor and Liv made some great breaks, whilst Mya and Josie were sensational in goal stopping anything that came their way.
Our player of the match was Mya, great effort Mya. Ruby was sadly missed, but will be back with us next week.

Seaforth U6 Killer Whales vs Wakehurst Seals
Final Score: 2:5
What a fantastic game!!! The Seals gave us a really good run and all our players played so well.
With Rosie as our team Captain for the week, we got off to a great start. We welcomed two new players, Hannah and Sarah who proved to be very valuable additions to our team.
Abbey was our goalie in the first half and managed to pick up the skills quickly and was not afraid to dive on the ball. Sophie, Rosie, Tom, Campbell all gave it their best shots but were just outdone by the Seals. Piers, Abbie and Sarah covered a lot of ground supporting our team and goalie extremely well.
By the Second half we were really fired up. Campbell was goalie and stopped every ball that came close, fantastic job. We dominated this half with Hannah showing great foot work, even setting up our Tom to secure a goal. Rosie and Sophie were in there all the time, fighting for the ball and had a ripper of a game. Sophie scoring our 2nd goal, well done Soph!
Players of the Match went to Hannah Foster, great work.
Special mention to Sarah who showed great determination being her first match. And a Happy Birthday to you!
And to Campbell - Star Goalie in the 2nd half!

This week was a really close match and the result could've gone either way. We were very unlucky not to score any goals, with several attempts hitting the post or shaving the net on the wrong side.
Adam and Aidan were outstanding in goals and were the definite improvers this week. Corrine, Charlie and Tristan were quick in attack and showed some great ball skills. Kara was very strong in defence and took on the Koalas. Harry and Louis performed some great tackles.
Congratulations Seals for an outstanding performance everybody showed lots of improvement and great sportsmanship.

Seaforth U6 Hawks vs Brookvale Waratahs
This game started with a bang, Eddie scored the first goal within 20 seconds of the start, and the Hawks dominated the game from that point on.
Eddie scored his second two minutes later, and went on to complete his hat-trick with a third goal in the first half! Stirling also scored twice in the first half, then opened the scoring one minute into the second with an excellent shot from a very fine angle on the right.
Released from goals in the second half, Byron set up the play with many attacking runs, and was unlucky to have some solid shots blocked by some good defence. Jordan scored his first ever goal through hard work in the goal square, working the ball out of the pack and past the 'keeper with a good strike.
Jay scored twice, and impressed with his passing and great team spirit. One of the hardest working players for the Hawks, Ben had his great effort rewarded with a goal late in the game. Wayne was in the thick of things, had one goal disallowed, but followed up with a great shot past the goalie to finish the match.
An excellent team effort, with goals shared, and some top passing and ball control. Well done Hawks!

Seaforth U6 Panthers v Manly Vale Bandicoots
Oh Panthers Oh
Oh, the places you'll go,
The teams that you'll meet,
With your goal-kicking feet.
They kick goals from here and they kick some from there
The quick-kicking Panthers, kick quick goals everywhere.
Unbeaten since the start of the season.
Please don't ask me why.
I don't quite know the reason.
Could it be that it's Lily, Gabriel or Torben
That the other teams cannot keep from scoring?
Then there's Wiley and Lloyd and there's Daniel and Conor
Also William and Harry who could carry that honour.
Just last weekend on the soft grass of Condover
The Manly Vale Bandicoot team came on over
To try out their luck, or so it would seem,
For they fancied their chances of beating our team.
As the Panthers ran on, Lloyd said "We'll give you a game.
You 'Coots might be good, but we'll have fun all the same."
William started to dart and Harry to weave,
Daniel leapt in a loop, Gabby zig-zagged at great speed.
All that darting and weaving, loop-leaping and zig-zagging
Saw the Bandicoots bodies and spirits start lagging.
With the match clock not even pointing at four,
Gabriel kicked with his right. What a strike! What a score!
How the Bandicoots' puzzled, 'till their puzzlers were sore
For they hadn't seen football like this played before.
While they scratched on their noggins and rubbed on their eyes's
Lily then gave them some further surprises.
She ran and she danced like a tiny Pelé
And she kept right on dancing and running that way
'Till she scored four more goals, filled with grace and aggression
Those poor Bandicoots could not stop her progression.
But the Bandicoots came back, and they came, and they came.
Conor and Torben defended, but they came just the same.
With Wiley in goal, as brave as can be,
He saved many goals - and he let in just three.
So the Panthers were winners, as they've been thrice before.
The others scored three times, but we scored two times more.
As for man of the match: Daniel won that reward.
And the one most improved was that Haslam chap, Lloyd.

Seaforth U7 Seals vs Wakehurst Leopards
What a great game this week. The Leopards gave us a really good run and all our players played their best.
Todd and Ben C did a lot of fancy footwork with a lot of support from Nic V, Liam, Matt, Will, Ben V and Philip. Nic C was in goals and had his work cut out for him. Only 2 goals slipped pasted. What an effort Nic!
Second half we were really with Philip in goals but the Leopards were too strong for us and they scored another 2 goals. Nic V had an really good run this week and helped support his team. Nic C was ready for a run and covered plenty of ground and help support our goalie. Liam and Matt were keen as mustard and had endless energy. Todd and Ben C were fighting for the ball and had a ripper of a game. Well done Seals.

Seaforth U7 Possums Vs Seaforth Bears
With no game last week due to bad weather and the team line up ravaged by Eisteddfods, it was going to be a tough challenge for the six remaining Possums. The chants from Patrick, Chloe, Sophie and Isabella at the Allambie Heights Community Centre were going to have to lift the team to new levels.
Pressure was intense in the first five minutes with the Seaforth Bears probing from all angles. With the glaring sun making it near impossible in the goals, Imogen pulled off a freakish save from an early lofted swirling shot that came from at least 20m out.
The Possums favoured pack defense and swarmed as an elite unit on any sign of danger. Josh & Jack were the strong hold with solid big kick clearances, whilst Ciara and Zoe closed any gaps down frustrating the Bears by not allowing them time on the ball. However the pressure from the Bears eventually got too much and several high lofted shots bypassed the eager Possums defence.
With the team tactics tweaked by Manager, and acting coach, Wayne Green at half time, the Possums came out fighting. Ceili donned the keepers jersey and Imogen slotted in well into the 5 - 0 - 0 - 1 format favoured by the up and coming young northern beaches sides. Straight away, the Possum's focused on some forging attacks down the centre of the field, first Jack and then Zoe, and supported on each occasion by Josh, whilst Ciara & Imogen made some great decoy runs. These piercing runs eventually saw reward with Zoe covering the length of the field and with what looked likely to be a duel between Zoe and the keeper, some smart thinking and great support work, saw the keeper fooled with an unselfish pass inside to Josh who punished the Bears with a first time shot into the corner of the net. What a team goal!
Ceili took up the challenge in the goals and immediately showed great courage throwing herself time and time again at the feet of the incoming strikers. This was a revived Possums team, but after dominating the first part of the second half, the lack of substitutes and the heat saw the Possums starting to wilt. The Bears strikers had to resort to different tactics to foil Ceili's lunging saves, with shots coming in from outside the penalty area. Ciara, Zoe and Jack continued to battle hard in midfield but it was a tough task with the heat from the autumn sun. The Possums persevered right to the end never losing sight of the lollies.
When the final whistle blew, Manager Green gave nothing but praise (& lollies) for the team for their great all round efforts with improvements showing across the board. Ceili's brave efforts in the goal earned her the Possum of the week. Back to reality on Monday for the team, with the relentless training routines to be fine tuned on Monday by Coach Russell.

Seaforth U7 Crows Vs Pittwater RSL Octopi
With the previous weekend having been a wash out the Crows came out to play and travelled to Kitchener Park to meet the Pittwater RSL Octopi.
The Crows started strongly from the kick off and pressure was applied with the strikers Callum and Zac peppering the goal. They were well supported by Will and Jacob in the mid field and as ever George was rock solid in the defensive sweeper role. The Pittwater goalie was kept busy either defending or taking goal kicks, which were driven back up by the Crows.
The deadlock wasn't broken until the first substitution, Alex G came on and made an immediate impact and put the ball in the back of the net. Lily in Goal for the Crows had to wait till right on half time to get her first touch of the ball. Half time score, 1 nil to the Crows!
The second half commenced with Zac taking over from his sister in goal and again he had a quiet half. Finlay moved into his familiar sweeper role, saw an opportunity and took the ball from well inside his half all the way, only to be deprived of a goal by a great diving save by the Pittwater goalie.
Mid way through the second half Callum scored the second goal. From the kick off the Crows again attacked and for their efforts earned their first corner. The resulting play saw Lily presented with the ball and only the goalie to beat... Goal. The final score 3 nil to the Crows.
Overall a great team performance.
Player of the week was Jacob who was tireless in the mid field and Finlay was awarded the team mascot.
Go the Crows!!!!!!

Seaforth U7 Bandits v Beacon Hills Pythons
Final score 1:2
Well done the Bandits! What a great game.
This week was a really close match and the result could have gone either way. We were very unlucky not to score another goal, with several attempts hitting the post.
James R was in goal in the first half and stopped the Pythons a few times with his great saves. There was some good passing and a few attempts by Isaac, Tobias and Ryan to score. Ryan scored our first and only goal of the game - well done. He also did some great defending.
In the second half Tobias did a good job in the goal saving a few attempts of the Pythons players to score.
Unfortunately the Pythons managed to score 2 late goals.
Our players tried really hard to score a second time but were unlucky.
Good team effort James W, Lukas, Isaac, Ryan, James R, Tobias and Claudia. We missed you, Milly and Georgie.
Player of the match went to Ryan, great game!
Well done the Bandits.

Seaforth U8 Dragons vs Seaforth Magpies
The winner became clear within seconds - The Magpies, wearing the "non Seaforth" redtops stood out in the fashion marks, breaking the monotony of the black and white. Lucky Magpies!
And the Dragons were without Killer Carl. Regardless, they put up a stupendous battle. Being absent from the Dragons game for a while, I did notice elbows have become increasingly higher during the tackles. Hugo's determination shone through, and from the sideline was a friendly reference to Jared as the "speed bump" during his aggressive tackles. Liam saved a lot of intended goals, but the Magpies overcome us with the first goal in the first half.
Entering the second half, the Magpies held their positions. Both Mitch and Hugo had great tries, but the Maggies goal-keeper proved too skilful. Then the Magpies Pocket Rocket started to shine. From out of nowhere, He/She swept the ball away from the Dragons, only to score consecutively.
We're not sure if it was the heat (is it still Summer??)... or if it was a week of partying by the Dragons still celebrating their previous 17-0 win... or too many sleepovers, but the Magpies won 5-1. Thanks go to our temporary coach Darren, and to man-of-the-match Hugo.

Seaforth U10 Dolphins vs Harbord
What a great day for soccer. The Dolphins were totally pumped for a great effort after last week's lay off.
Coach Chiswell and supporters were not disappointed after a fantastic effort by the team. The 0-3 result in no way a reflection of the closeness of the contest. Many shots from Tara, Anna, Maddy, Georgina, Holy, Emily and the rest of the team sizzled past the posts.
The defence was also awesome with the goals conceded only after miraculous shots from the home team.
The half time oranges were a real highlight - really delicious, juicy and fresh. Included in the leftovers were two half eaten rhubarb muffins which mysteriously were found in the Orange bowl. Where did these muffins come from? Who ate them? Did they impact the performance of the girls in the second half? Questions that will probably never be answered.
Onwards and upwards girls.

Seaforth Ladies U12/3 Stingers V Beacon Hill
At Miller Reserve Sunday 6th May 2007
Result: Seaforth Stingers 2 Beacon Hill 0
The quality of the football matched the brilliance of the autumn day at Manly Vale. The Stingers escaped with the points but Beacon Hill created plenty of chances, and it was only brilliant goal-keeping in the second half from Rebecca that denied the Blue strikers at least 3 goals.
Beacon Hill began brightly and applied all the early pressure. The Stingers were stuck in their own half and it took some time before they could settle into a rhythm. When they did, the game suddenly opened up, and it because an exciting end-to-end contest. Seaforth made the first decisive break, Emily drawing a great save from the Beacon Hill keeper, and by the end of the half the Stingers seemed to be getting on top. Our strikers put three more good shots on goal: two were saved, and one went wide.
Into the second half, and the Stingers forced two early corners. There was plenty of pressure being applied, but a game-breaking goal seemed stubbornly out of reach. Suddenly, Claudia received a through ball just inside the Beacon Hill half and she set out towards the goal. Cover tackles came across but she took the ball almost right to the line before whipping in a left foot shot that gave the goalie no chance. 1-nil, and great excitement on the sidelines.
Beacon Hill came back strongly, and their speedy forwards mounted some terrific raids on the Stingers goal. Bec was forced to make two outstanding reflex saves, one of them plucked from the air right in front her face. Her efforts inspired her team-mates, and the Stingers went 2-nil up moments later: Georgia created space down the right, beat a couple of players and centred the ball, and Claudie was on hand to slot it home. 2-nil.
But guess what? Beacon Hill came back even more strongly than before, and once again Bec found herself under siege. Once more she was able to pull off a wonderful reflex stop, this time with her legs, and Georgia came from nowhere to stop another shot that was heading for the goal. The whistle couldn't come soon enough, and there were some delighted players when it finally did.
This was a very evenly-matched contest, but probably on balance Seaforth deserved the win because they did more with their chances and Bec was a rock between the sticks. Terrific win, ladies.
