Van Marinos Always Had Faith

- Report courtesy of: www.mwfa.com.au

Despite losing key men Adam Israel (broken leg) and Micky Williams (work commitments) after a handful of games, the Seaforth captain still felt his squad had enough quality to challenge for the top four.

However injuries set in and then players went to South Africa to cheer on the Socceroos at the World Cup. All of a sudden relegation from the Premier League became a reality. But rather than panic, Marinos stuck to his guns.

"We have a good squad, we just need to believe in ourselves a bit more," he said yesterday when reflecting on Seaforth's 2-0 win over Wakehurst. "It is a very even competition, any team can win on their day. I always felt once a bit of luck went our way we could go on a run."

The black-and-whites chalked up their second win of the season from their last three outings on Saturday, thanks to goals in each half from Tom Jowett and Bryce Robson.

It was a match Marinos felt his resurgent team dominated. "Once we got the first goal it was all about pushing for a second and bossing the game," he said. "It was a great feeling to hear the whistle at full-time, our confidence is sky high at the moment."

Seaforth coach Glenn Wood was equally confident his team could reverse their fortunes, but also stressed plenty of work still needs to be done.

"Credit to the boys, they could have dropped their heads after a few of our early losses and felt it was all too hard," he said. "The past few weeks we have sent out the same team onto the park and it is no coincidence we are starting to gel. But we are still bottom of the league, we have to show everyone we are better than that over the next few weeks."

In the other games, Pittwater RSL FC beat Manly Allambie 2-1, Beacon Hill thrashed Forest Killarney 4-1 thanks to a Matt Gale hat-trick, Manly Vale upset Mosman 1-0 and CC Strikers dusted Brookvale 2-1.

1sts: An amazing game. A game of two halves.

We played some sparkling football in the 1st half and scored 3 goals and were dominating in all areas. Even with such a big lead we knew the game was far from over and that Strikers would come out in the second half with all guns blazing as really they had nothing to lose.

They were awarded a soft penalty however even at 3-1 we should have been able to defend the lead and see out the game. When they scored their second it was well and truly game on.

For some reason we stopped doing all the good things we had been doing in the 1st half (pressure, intensity, effort, talking, getting 1st to the ball, etc...) and we paid the price. A real shame as this was a game we let slip through our fingers.

Man of the Match: Chris

Reserve Grade: SEAFORTH FC 2 COLLAROY 5

We never really got going and paid the price with a casual approach to our football as well as not showing enough care in our defensive third.

Strikers pounced and before we knew it we had conceded a few goals. We battled away however we cant afford to give away soft goals and hope to win the game. More intensity & effort is required.

SAT 8th MAY
BEACON HILL 3 SEAFORTH FC 1
KICK OFF: 3:00pm
BEACON HILL #1

1sts: We started well and Bryce and Ben were combining well and looking sharp. Dash and Mark were doing well in midfield and were supplying good quick service out wide and to the strikers.

We created many good opportunities. Our football was rewarded and Bryce scored a well taken goal.

A disallowed pen for a clear hand ball was a turning a point. BH immediately clearly the ball and were awarded a pen for a tackle that was outside the box. We had our chances and we could have and should have been up two or three goals at half time.

We know BH are tough opposition and they came out strongly in the second half. Against the run of play they scored a second. We then pushed men fwd looking for an equaliser and then with almost the last kick of the game they scored a third.

A game we were arguably the better team for the majority of the game however we just need a little bit of luck to go our way.

Injuries to Marc and Dash also meant for a quiet night back at the club house.

Man of the Match: Van

Reserve Grade: BEACON HILL 6 SEAFORTH FC 1

After a comprehensive win the previous week it was important to consolidate that with another good performance. We started the game with much optimism but unfortunately it finished with many questions being asked.

To lose 6-1 and cop a 11 goal turnaround was an unexpected to say the least and all the good work from the previous week was undone. A real shame as we had been playing well. Lets just hope this was a one off.

SAT 1st MAY
SEAFORTH FC 1 MANLY ALLAMBIE 2
KICK OFF: 3:00pm
SEAFORTH #1

1sts: Both teams were desperate for the points and played like it.

It was an absorbing game, however at times both teams showed signs of nerves not wanting to lose. It was looking like a goal would be enough to separate the teams.

MA scored a late winner and were relieved to take the three points, although on the balance of play a draw would have been a fair result. A gutsy effort by us but unfortunately no points to show for the endeavour.

Man of the Match: Scott

Reserve Grade: SEAFORTH FC 6 MANLY ALLAMBIE 0
Manly Allambie are always competitive so it was a surprise to have scored six goals past them. A combination perhaps of us playing really well and them having an off day (we all have those).

Nevertheless we played some terrific football with Andrew and Nick getting a double and one a piece to Junior and Dan.

All in all a vey good performance and very enjoyable to watch.

SAT 24th APRIL
WAKEHURST FC 2 SEAFORTH FC 1
KICK OFF: 3:00pm
LIONEL WATTS #4

1sts: This was a real battle and we went up 1 nil thanks to a good strike from Nathan at the far post after good work from Dash down the right.

We kept going forward and searched for the second however we could not convert one of the several good chances we had. Wakehurst starting to come back into the game in the second half and unfortunately a lack of concentration cost us two goals.

A game we should have won but let slip away.

Man of the Match: Dash

Reserve Grade: WAKEHURST FC 0 SEAFORTH FC 1

A hard fought and well deserved victory.

It is never easy playing Wakehurst at home however the boys played with some real grit and it was a "special" goal from Abe that broke the deadlock. Coming on as sub he produced and overhead kick that flew into the far corner and gave the goal keeper no chance. A great strike and one worthy of winning any game.

Man of the Match: Abe.

SAT 17th APRIL
SEAFORTH FC 1 PITTWATER RSL 3
KICK OFF: 3:00pm
SEAFORTH #1

This was going to be a test against last years grand final winners.

We started a bit slow and paid the price as we allowed a Pittwater player to get a cross over from the goal line and then we failed to deal with the ball in our 6yrd box (unforgivable) and the centre forward was able to climb high and head the ball home. This was a wake up call and we then started to impose ourselves on the game.

1-0 at half time.

The second half we went up a gear and our effort and pressure was rewarded with Nick H turning his marker and finishing well to put us back on level terms.

A key turning point in the game was when the ref awarded a penalty which had players and spectators from both sides scratching their heads. The spot kick was converted.

We battled away and searched for the equaliser and just when it looked like we might score our opponents went down the other end and the cross from the left was finished off at the near post. Game over.

Score: Lost 3-1

It was important to back up our win from the previous week with a good performance. It was going to be a real test as we were vs last years major premiers.

Pittwater scored first with a well taken goal. We showed great determination and worked ourselves back into the contest. Dash pounced on a mistake by the Pittwater defence and left his defender on the ground with some quick feet and then calmly slotted the ball past the keeper and into the goal.

1-1 at half time.

The second half we grew with confidence and played some good football. In the hot conditions the game was stretched and there was goal mouth action at both ends. We had some good chances and their keeper pulled off a couple of good saves.

In the end a draw was probably a fair result.

SAT 10th APRIL
FOREST KILLARNEY 2 SEAFORTH FC 0
KICK OFF: 3:00pm
MELWOOD #1

MATCH REPORT - 1st GRADE
This was a danger game in many ways as playing a team who had 10 goals put past them the previous week would surely be fired up to prevent that from reoccurring. We spoke about getting the ball wide and when we did we looked dangerous however we did not use the flanks enough. Forest made life difficult and threw themselves at everything.

Nil all at half time and we had a game on our hands. A tough decision went against us for hand ball in the box and Forest were awarded a penalty which was converted. We had chances ourselves but could not convert. Not long after we failed to prevent a cross from the right and the pass found its player on the edge of the box who had too much time to control the ball, look up and pick his spot and he chipped the ball over Scott and into the goal.

With more than 20mins left on the clock we had enough time to get something out of the game. As it turned out we peppered their goal and had enough good chances to have won the game, however we were left to rue all the missed opportunities. We will be doing plenty of shooting practice at training this week.

We played some good football at times but ultimately the game is about putting the ball in the back of the net. When we start doing that we will be hard to beat.

Man of the Match: Van

MATCH REPORT - RESERVE GRADE
Reserve Grade: FOREST KILLARNEY 2 SEAFORTH FC 3

A very warm Saturday in April as we headed over to Melwood Oval for our clash against Forest Killarney. We needed to bounce back after our game the previous week. We look determined from the start and played some good football. Dan caught the eye with two well taken goals and an assist to Junior who scored with a diving header at the back post.

Overall a much better performance however we must remember to keep our concentration after we score as Forest were able to score and keep in touch throughout the game.

Goals: Dan 2, Junior 1.

Clinical Brookie's points as rivals lose skipper for season

BROOKVALE coach Joe Santarosa has lauded the clinical nature of his Premier League squad, declaring Saturday's season-opening win "fantastic".

The Blues scored in each half of a match that was halted early after Seaforth captain Adam Israel broke his leg following a hearty challenge on Ben Squires-Quinn.

David Pascuzzo opened the scoring with a neat finish after latching on to a ball from Joel Korocz midway through the first half, before Squires-Quinn nodded home a Steve Riches free kick to wrap up the contest 15 minutes before the final whistle.

With Seaforth bombing their series of half chances, Santarosa was quick to heap praise on his team.

"It was a tough game first-up, a great hit-out for us," he said. "They asked plenty of questions and our defence held firm, it was a fantastic effort. It is never easy coming up to Seaforth Oval, all the boys spoke about the wind factor in the second half. Now we have to maintain that tempo week in, week out."

His opposite Glenn Wood felt Israel's injury was the turning point.

"Adam is our leader and once we lost him we weren't the same team," he said. "They (Brookvale) only had a handful of chances and took two of them, that is the sign of a good team. I felt we matched them in most aspects but didn't have that cutting edge in front of goal. Adam will obviously be a loss but we have enough quality to fill the void."

Israel will miss the rest of the season, with his right leg in plaster for the next six to eight weeks.

"It is one of those things, the ball was there (to be won) so I had a go at it," he said. "The pain was unbelievable, I have broken my ankle twice previously but this was something else."

In the other games, Mosman edged out Manly Allambie 2-1, Pittwater RSL FC hammered Forest Killarney 10-1, CC Strikers beat Wakehurst 1-0 and Beacon Hill came from behind to triumph over Manly Vale 2-1.
