VALE CAMERON BANNERMAN
28.3.1919---2.7.2011

It is with deep regret that I announce the passing of Cameron Bannerman.

Cameron was one of the founding members of Seaforth Youth Club and had a great influence on the club and his love for the game of football never faltered.

He also designed the first banner and uniform of the club.

Our thoughts go out to his family in this time of sadness.

State Cup Match Reports

Seaforth 11/1s
Seaforth Vs Hills Brumbies (Sydney Cup at Granville).

A sunny day, an hours drive and a daunting prospect against an 'academy team' that trains several times a week with paid coaches!

Despite that our boys were confident which was shown in the opening few minutes when Banno at centre forward twice threatened the Brumbies goal but quick, last ditch defending kept him at bay. The Brumbies were a skilful team but our boys matched them in every department but couldn't convert the chances that came our way. One unusual lapse of concentration left a Brumbies forward with a one on one with our goalie which the Brumbie forward won to put them up by half time by the narrowest of margins.
The signs were good in the first half that the game was there for us to win and the boys did everything to prove that except find the back of the net. Joa and the rest of the defence were solid and a springboard to transition from defence to attack. Throughout the half the Brumbies were restricted to a couple of long range shots straight at our keeper (who none the less made them look easier than they were) and a couple well wide.

At the other end chances came and went, shots bounced across the line or past the woodwork and a penalty to all (including the Brumbies manager) was turned down by the referee. By the final whistle the Brumbies had managed to hold on to their slender lead but realised that they would have been lucky to draw the game let alone win.

They say the beauty of football is you can play badly and win...... but it is frustrating to be the better team and lose! Despite going out of the cup in the first round the boys played their hearts out, can hold their heads high and look forward with confidence to next years Cup.

Thanks for a great effort from Liam and Bryan who stepped up from the 11/2's and fitted well into the team!

14s: Seaforth 1 St Marys Eaglevale 2

Seaforth U14s mini adventure in this year's NSW State Cup came to an end on Sunday morning in Campbelltown, when, after taking a deserved 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half, tired legs and just 1 substitute became the difference between two evenly matched sides.

Having travelled to Goulburn to thrash the Southern Tablelands representative team 5-0 in the first round, another early morning start seemed to bring the best out of the boys, who, unlike their opponents, were backing up from a tough league game only 24 hours earlier.

From the first whistle, Seaforth played some lovely football, mixing this with determination and competitiveness to give their opponents a tough first half. Both sides had chances to open the scoring but it wasn't until 10 minutes into the 2nd half that Conor Wilson broke the deadlock for the black and whites, this just after St Marys Eaglevale had had a goal rightly disallowed for offside.

However, as legs tired towards the end, two well taken break away goals from a pacy front line consigned Seaforth to a 2-1 defeat.

The team can feel proud not only of how they played today but of how well they
represented the club at state level on and off the pitch. They'll be the better for their
first experience of playing outside the MWFA competition and will be back for more
next season.

Now the focus goes back to putting some wins together in the local league, starting
next Saturday.

Seaforth 3rd in 2010 Strikers Cup

Seaforth Strikers Cup Team 2010 SEAFORTH 3RD
IN 2010 STRIKERS CUP

What a beautiful Spring morning we all woke to knowing that it was business time for our U/9 Strikers Cup team that had only been put together a month prior.

Our Coach Adam Sloan and Manager Jason Agapiou had put as much into a team that can be done in such a short period of time.

The team had a few trials that were disappointing as far as the score line went, but Adam assured his little charges that this team building was going to produce the stamina to overcome adversity and fight at all costs for your team mates.

We all mustered at 7am for registration and the Coffee van hadn't even set up yet. (inhumane treatment from the start, the CC Strikers were trying to Psyche us out). The kids looked so proud in their Seaforth Rep Shirts you could see that they had ideas of making a significant stamp on the day.

Teams from all over Sydney and the Central Coast were represented. Our first 3 group games were going to be hard as we pulled a tough draw. Beacon Hill, Birrong and CC Strikers Gold.

Seaforth in action at the Strikers Cup 2010 - photos courtesy of The Manly Daily

We were unlucky against Beacon Hill and were held to a Nil all draw. A few poor ref decisions and a bit of first time jitters had to be overcome. Also our first run as a team on the big pitch as an 11 a side team. The team knew that we needed to win the next 2 games to go through to the next level.

The kids laid waste to Birrong who had no answers to Seaforth's attack.
(I ran out of fingers so didn't keep score)

The lift in spirit was infectious.
Our goalie Oscar had decided that all holes were covered and no team was going to get near him. The Backs Sam, Lily, Sterling and Finn started playing as if they had been together for years covering each others positions in both attack and defence. The Midfielders were Olly, Taj, Eddie, Sam, Jay and Jack who all worked tirelessly covering the entire field and feeding the ball to the front. The Forwards were Lachie, Elliot and Sam who picked up all the ball given to them and tried to put numbers on the board to show the teams efforts.

We were now up against the CC Strikers Gold team on Cromer No1. From the start of the game to the finish we knew that if we didn't score a basket of goals it could be the end of our day. We sat in palpable anticipation in the Grand Stand as the team went into the bunker.

The team lined up to play knowing that it was only a big win that would keep them in the Cup or it would be home for a late lunch. From the starting whistle it was evident that The CC Strikers should have had a sleep in rather than battle with this no nonsense Seaforth outfit.

I ran out of fingers again but as everyone sadly says "unfortunately I didn't run out of voice". Another great win to Seaforth. (The kids looked bullet proof)

It was time for the 3/4 finals which were drawn out of the hat. We got the CC Strikers Green Team. (bugger) This is the team that is trained by MOSSY the Central Coast Mariners Coach. This team had been hand picked and drilled all year for this competition alone.

Our kids couldn't have cared less and were going to put their best game on if this was to be the big test of their abilities.(all the pomp had the parents worried and weren't we wrong)

The Seaforth Team was spectacular and could not have surprised the onlookers more than to end up winning 3 nil. Seaforth were over the moon, we had removed the 2 CC Strikers teams from the comp including the hot favourites. The team was exhausted now after such a brilliant effort and deserved a break and a breather to recover.

To our dismay we had to back up in 5 minutes against Wakehurst. (no rest) Our exhausted team went on to the field and could barely lift their feet, we were puffed and Wakehurst had the benefit of a 30 minute break.

Unfortunately we went down 2 - Nil to Wakehurst in a very brave and proud effort by the whole team. Wakehurst went on to beat the Hills in a 4 - Nil Grand Final.

We we left wondering, what could have been if only we got the benefit of a breather to recover before playing Wakehurst. Our little Champions almost pulled it off and were all big winners in their parents eyes.

Congratulations Seaforth Strikers Team of 2010

Seaforth FC help Indochina Starfish Foundation - UPDATE 28/7

Photo: Indochina Starfish Foundation players with coach Srey Mau

Seaforth FC have donated some of their old playing strips to the Indochina Starfish Foundation.

The Indochina Starfish Foundation is an International Charity founded in 2006. Its key aim is to provide a lifeline for some of the poorest, most disadvantaged children in Cambodia by providing them with the opportunity to complete a full education programme, the opportunity to participate in a weekly youth football coaching programme or, in some cases, both.

The boys in the photo above are actually from Indochina Starfish Foundations school, which is located in the Stung Meanchay community on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. The ISF teams are called The Flying Tigers; these boys are from the grassroots program, which means they are 10 years of age and younger.

The boys are taking part in the inaugural U13s Boys National Football Tournament which will be played throughout July. The competition is being held at the Football Federation of Cambodia ground which is located 25 kms outside of Phnom Penh. The boys have already had success taking the 3 points in their first game of the tournament.

The female coach, Srey Mau, is one of only two females in Cambodia that hold a C licence accredited by The Asian Football Federation. Srey Mau is employed full time by ISF.

World Cup Events for Seaforth FC

WORLD CUP
EVENTS
FOR SEAFORTH FC

It's fantastic that the World Cup, the pinnacle of world football, is just around the corner.

So, to celebrate the tournament of the world's greatest game and also to thank all our players, parents and supporters for all your help and involvement throughout the season, Seaforth FC will be putting on a few events throughout June and July.

To start with we'll kick off a TIPPING COMPETITION now. There will be one entry allowed per Seaforth FC team (yes, U6s up to Premier League) - try and match your knowledge against all the other teams in the club.

First prize will be an official Australian jersey, scarf and cap for every player on the team. Second prize will be a season pass for four for Sydney FC games to share around the team.

An email will arrive with your team manager soon inviting each team to login and start entering your tips. Be in it !

We also hope to be showing Australia's and England's games live at the clubhouse on a big screen. Come and watch it with your mates and scream and shout as loud as you want without having to worry about waking up the next door neighbours!

Numbers will be limited and we haven't finalised all the details but we're certainly trying hard to make this happen.

Here's hoping Australia has a great tournament and June and July are packed full of fabulous football moments.

Seaforth U10/1 'Stormers' - Barry Donnelley Knockout Cup

Seaforth U10/1 'Stormers'

Photo: Seaforth U10/1 'Stormers'

Barry Donnelley Knockout Cup, May 2010

Magnificent, courage, determination, grit, spirit, never give up attitude, passionate. Words aren't enough to describe the Herculean effort 'our boys' put in to come so near yet so far in this years Barry Donnelley Knockout Cup.

As we began the trek to the West we knew the names of the teams we would play but nothing about them other than a fearsome reputation.

We arrived to the eclectic colours of opposing teams mingling with the excited cries of hundreds of excited young players all straining at the leash. The top teams from three first round games would go through to the 'sudden death' semi finals.

Game 1 - Stormers vs Emu Plains
The first game against Emu Plains soon settled into a pattern with Seaforth 'Stormers' having the balance of play.  Defence was soon turned into attack with confident full backs Joe and Tom feeding the dominant midfielders of Caleb, Fergus, Ben 'Rymaldo' and Ali G 'Gilato' and then on to the speedy wingers of Ben C and Alex R to terrorise the Emu Plains defence.  Crosses were met by speedy Nick F and Josh in the middle with the midfield backing up but despite the chances none seemed to find the back of the net.

Frayed nerves were eased when eventually a typical move saw Joe winning the ball at full back, passing sweetly to Caleb on left wing, Caleb to Ben 'Rymaldo' moving out wide who crossed into the danger area.  The ball broke to Fergus moving through from midfield.  Fergus picked his spot and prodded it towards the bottom right hand corner.

Agonisingly it hit the upright and rolled along the line.  The players seemed mesmerised as the slow motion ball headed towards the other post. The expectant crowd held its breath; surely not another chance could be cleared. As one, the 'Seaforth Faithful' pumped the air with joy (and relief) as the ball eventually nestled inside the opposite side netting!

One nil and Seaforth on a roll! The Seaforth back four marshalled by the dominant pairing of Nic 'Twinkle Toes' and Charlie 'Chilli' in the middle backed by confident goal keeping made any Emu Plains attacks look ordinary.  By the end Stormers could have won by several goals but with the points in the bag it was a great start.

Game 2 - Stormers vs Earlwood
The next game followed a similar pattern with Seaforth dominating but unable to convert the opportunities.  Eventually Josh won the ball on the edge of the Earlwood Wanderers area and powered past their defence.  The goalkeeper came quickly and bravely off his line to dive at the ball only to connect with Josh.  Penalty!

Nerves were on edge as the boys had never practised penalties. Caleb stepped up bravely and with a sweet left boot drilled the unstoppable ball home low into the left hand corner.

As with the first game Stormers were unable to convert any more of the chances but another win put us in a strong position to go through to the next round.

This good news was tempered by the loss of Josh for the rest of the comp. with a recurrence of a knee injury sustained in Saturday's games.  Despite this he hobbled around and insisted he would be ok to play.  The reality was, however, that now we were down to the bare 11 with no subs left!

Game 3 - Stormers vs Moorebank
The final first round game was against Moorebank who had demolished the two teams they had played and scored eight goals in the process.  Moorebank proved to be a strong side and the fluency and chances that Stormers created in the first two games were only few and far between in this.

Despite Moorebanks strength the deadlock was only broken by what looked to be a harsh penalty against Seaforth midway in the first half.  With the game ending 1-0 to Moorebank the boys faced an agonising wait to see if two wins was enough to go through.

When a delegation returned from HQ to say that we had progressed grubby faces lit up and tired limbs were soon forgotten.

Semi Final - Stormers vs Canley Heights
Canley Heights would be our opponents in the semi.  A team with plenty of subs who train four times a week and have played on full size pitches for two years!  We were down to 11!  Clearly, this would be our small bands sternest test 'Once more unto the breach, dear friends'!

Our gallant but tired knights lined up, the hooter sounded; GAME ON.  Canley in blue made their intentions clear from the start.  Skilful in nearly all departments they pressed our boys but as in all the other games confident goalkeeping, a sound defence and midfield supporting the defence and attack stunted all Canley's efforts.

Occasional forays into enemy territory could even have seen us go one up but when half time came honours were still even.

It took a moment of brilliance midway in the second half to break the deadlock.  The Canley centre forward pounced on a ball outside our penalty area, jinked around three defenders and unleashed a rocket of a shot that no one could have stopped.

The relief for Canley was clear to see but still our boys were defiant and dogged.  Only one goal and we would be back.  Tired limbs were now starting to show but with no subs everyone bravely soldiered on.  Ali G was clutching his side, Caleb was floored and hurt his shoulder but both epitomised the team spirit and insisted they stay on.

Eventually the pressure on Seaforth told and Canley forced a corner.  From the corner the ball was quickly cleared but only as far as a blue midfielder on the edge of our box who swung and the ball hit the roof of our net.  Two down but still our boys wouldn't give up.  Another crunching tackle on Chilli saw him fall awkwardly on his injured wrist and join the growing rank of walking wounded so eventually we were down to ten men.

The final hooter sounded, two nil and jubilation for Canley who knew they had been in perhaps the hardest game they had played for a long time.

As our boys trudged and hobbled off the field the effort, highs and lows of the day were etched in every grimey, sweat stained and just a few tear stained faces   Angels no longer, battle weary Trojans they were. They had been so close to the 'glory' final but when they realised just what they had achieved the tears soon dried to be replaced by smiles. Disappointed but not down hearted. Semi finalists, beaten but unbowed. They had run their hearts out and little legs off!  Surely the coach was not alone with a lump in his throat. Our boys had lost to very worthy opposition and the eventual winners, beating Morebank 4-0 in the final.

The organisers should be congratulated on an excellent competition.  Every game from first to last was played in an outstanding spirit, with passion, pride and great determination.  Players, coaches, managers and parents from every team were exemplary ambassadors for the game, supporting their team, applauding good play in every team and accepting every decision by officials and organisers with good grace. This is what sport is all about, I was proud to be part of it and immensely proud of our boys and the part they played in it.

As the sun set on a long day, our boys departed the field with no silverware but with great memories and heads held high. Coach, Manager and parents couldn't have been prouder of what our boys had achieved and how they had 'played the game'.

SEAFORTH ALL STARS TRIUMPHANT IN 6 A SIDE COMPETITION

For the second consecutive year the Seaforth All Stars were winners of the Beacon Hill 6 A Side competition in the U11 category. The team displayed some magnificent football skills and great team work to pull off the win.

Placed second in the comp, the team had to play the winning team in a very tight game. With only 1 minute to go, the score was locked at 2-2 and penalty shoot outs seemed like a possibility until some great defence work got the ball to the midfield who displayed great passing to the strikers for a terrific back of the net goal.

What a thrilling win in the dying seconds of the game.
Well Done to the team on a great win.

The players are :
Back Row : Liam Michael, Tyson Holmes and Fraser Hall
Front Row : Jamie Bennetts, Larry Springfeld, Ewan Metcalfe and Alex Leach

Talk of the Town 2010

Talk of the Town 2010
Warringahs Housing Future
Community Summit

Warringah Council is asking its residents for feedback and input into how Warringah will look in the future. State Government strategies forecast that within 20 years Warringah will need to fit at least 10,000 more homes and 25,000 more people.

This will not only impact on housing but has many related issues, such as transport, housing density, infrastructure, open space, and more, as I am sure you can imagine.

Council is hoping that as many younger people register to attend the community summit as possible.

The Talk of the Town 2010 is to be held at the Dee Why RSL on 23 May 11.30am - 3.30pm - lunch, refreshments, prizes and the chance to 'have your say'. It is to be MC'd by James O'Loughlin. Registrations close on 23 April.

Manly West Quirk Rd Upgrades

MANLY WEST
QUIRK RD UPGRADES

Our training fields at Manly West Quirk Rd are scheduled to be further upgraded in March by Manly Council.

The grounds will be levelled and drainage installed which should significantly decrease the problems using the fields after rains.

Also the field sizes will be increased so that there will be two U9 three-quarter size fields with permanent posts.

The fields also now have two light towers, a 24 hour toilet and kerb and guttering has been installed in the car parking area.

So this will be a much improved training facility for the club. Our thanks to Manly Council & to the Committee who have worked for a long time to get these upgrades.

The works are scheduled to be completed before the start of the season in early April. Watch the club website for updates about these improvements.

Over 35's Coach Wanted

Do you regret hanging up those boots?

A low division Seaforth side within the Over 35's league had a get together over Christmas to celebrate their best year for 3 years.

The result - 'they won ONE game'.

This team of (reasonably) dedicated players have bonded well over the years, and almost entirely agreed to sign up for another year of 'good effort and camaraderie'.

An underlying desire for improved performance exists however, and this recent taste of success has resulted in an agreement to seek assistance from a knowledgeable individual who wishes to join the squad in a non-playing coach/manager capacity.

The role has very few perks. It does not pay, and whilst the team are motivated - they are pretty useless. All club fees will be paid by the existing team members, who have also agreed to provide transport for the coach, and ensure that he/she is not expected to pay for their round of drinks. The general feeling is that these old-timer players need an old-timer coach.

We seek a person with demonstrable experience of training and match-day management, with proven ability to devise the best structure and method for a team of mixed ability to work well together (we have fit members who cannot play football, and good footballers who are unfit). In addition to these qualifications, the person appointed will need a thick skin; not mind losing (initially); and be of friendly disposition. Whilst this team have aspirations, their primary objective remains having fun with their mates and getting fit.

Enquiries and applications by email or phone call to Phil Redding (Right back - more often than not) on: Philip.redding@endor.com.au or 0414 212 142. In the event of multiple suitable candidates being interested, informal meetings may be required.

Seaforth U10 All Stars - Champions Spring six-a-side competition

On the 11th November the Seaforth U10 All Stars were crowned Champions of the Spring six-a-side competition at Cromer Park.

Over 10 weeks the highly fancied CC Strikers 'The Devils', (they won the U10 Div 1 Grand final) and Seaforth finished 1 & 2 in the league and faced off in a titanic grand final.

Seaforth were slow to start went 1-0 down, we soon got going and struck back with 2 goals going into half time. 2nd half we scored another goal to lead 3-1... they threw everything at us with 7min to go they grabbed a goal 3-2 - we dug deep and defended well to hold on for a great victory.

The All Stars distinguished themselves throughout the season losing only 2 games and having the best goals scored and against record. What made it all the more special was most of the opposition were U11's teams!! - their enthusiasm in competing for every ball and their excellent team play maintained our 100% record in 6 a side football - bring on the Autumn 6 a side!

Tyson Holmes our leading goal scorer missed the final due to Tiger mania in Melbourne.

A huge round of applause for Phil Smith, David Springfeld and Sue Hall for your efforts with coaching, conditioning and managing the 6-a-side team who organised the team and built the team spirit on which this great result was built!

Well done All Stars - Good luck in the Autumn 6 a side.
