David who? For goals, see Angus

Angus Mawson - photo courtesy of The Mosman Daily

ANGUS Mawson’s dream is one day to bend it like David Beckham, but not even the golden player of English football could match the goal tally of this Neutral Bay kindergarten student.

Angus, aged five, just played his first season with the Seaforth Dragons, for whom he scored an astonishing 37 goals.

Even more remarkable, those goals came in just 15 games.

Such is his talent, Angus has already been selected by Football NSW for its Sydney North elite under-7/8 training program.

“We were very surprised he got selected, considering he was younger than the other kids,” his dad Mark said. “He has always had a ball at his feet since about the age of two.

“Whether it be outside, inside, wherever, we always just hear the ball bouncing up against the wall he just loves it.”

After years of nagging his dad, Angus was finally given the chance to play football.

Never having played against other children before, Mr Mawson said he had no idea what to expect once his son hit the field.

“He had to wait until age five before he was allowed to play, and he said after training that he had a game coming up,” Mr Mawson said.

“His first game was actually against an older team and he managed to get through them and score two goals, and he just loved it.”

Mr Mawson told the Daily that Angus would often dribble the ball past countless defenders and score goals.

And it seems Angus has learnt the Beckham way to celebrate his goals his sister Lizzie said he often runs with his shirt held above his head.

“The coach would often tell him, after he had scored a few and it was clear we were going to win, to ‘start passing the ball around now, Angus’,” Mr Mawson said.

“But sometimes he would get the ball, have no one to pass it to and the coach would say ‘off you go then, Angus’, and sure enough he dribbled around and scored.”

Angus lists his favourite players as David Beckham and Lucas Neill, and, worryingly for future Australian selectors, he wants to play for England one day.

“I like football because I like scoring goals,” he said

And is there any other reason he likes football, the Daily asked: “Because it’s fun,” he said.

And his aim for next season is equally simple and straightforward: “I want to score 39 goals next.”

Angus will now train twice a week with Football NSW.

Strikers Cup 2008 Wrap Up

Seaforth FC Strikers Cup Squad 2008

Well the shirts are in the wash, the kids are ready for a good sleep and the Cup is over for 2008.

I think we would all agree the team gave a good account of themselves and Seaforth F.C. With 2 good wins and a narrow 1-0 loss in the final game they were unlucky not to progress to the quarter finals. Seaforth U/10s next year will be strong.

Results
v Moorebank - Seaforth won 2-0
v Wakehurst - Seaforth won 2-1
v Gunners - Gunners won 1-0

6 points and 2nd place in their group

Many thanks to everyone who helped with organisation and on the day:
Joe Van Leeuwen - our great coach.
Alan Glixman (SFC U9 Age Manager) - who organised the trials, registered the team and made my job easy.
Darren and the 7am Dads who had the Seaforth tent up in prime position at 7.15 am this morning and had it back to the club by 3.30pm this afternoon.
The Wonderful Mums who organised snacks and drinks.
Paul Gunning - who made sure we had photos of the team.

Here are some details about our matches...

Match 1 (v Moorebank)
Seaforth started strongly and opened with an early goal through excellent passing with a strong finish by Tyson Holmes. The team made several chances, dominated play and were denied 2 more goals by great saves. The team continued their strong play in the 2nd half and again had several chances denied by good keeping. The second goal came after a penalty when Larry Springfield, after a typically determined run, was felled in the box with the goal wide open. William Mellor took a very cool penalty with a firm curling strike into the top left corner of the net leaving the keeper with no chance. Result WIN Seaforth FC 2-0

A very strong start and the Seaforth team were building the confidence and combinations for a good day.

Match 2 (v Wakehurst) - Cromer Park 1
The team took the big ground like seasoned Manly United professionals and took an early lead after some strong mid-field play set up a long run for Hugo Weston who finished like a professional striker with a cool chip over the keeper to go up 1-0. They opened in similar fashion in the second period and some passing to space from the back of the field led to strong move up the left side and excellent finish from Liam Michael to 2-0 up. The team also defended well and were unlucky to concede a goal late in the game with a defensive mix up in the box. Result WIN Seaforth FC 2-1.

Undefeated, maximum 6 points and best for and against in the group........ Seaforth poised for a big final pool game clash with the other undefeated team in the pool, Gunners from Macquarie Fields.

Match 3 (v Gunners - Macquarie Fields)
Back to Cromer Park 3 for the final pool game and tensions running high. Seaforth with their superior number of goals needed a win or draw to progress to the quarter finals. The boys started slowly and Gunners dominated the early minutes of the game. In the mid-period, Gunners star striker made a long break down the right side and sent in a floating cross, which drifted over all players and the keeper into the top left side of the net. Seaforth unlucky and down 1-0 at half time. Seaforth came out strongly in the second half and dominated most of the play with everyone fighting hard for the ball, getting into space and playing through some nice passes. Still there were few chances with Gunners defending strongly. Seaforth were on the attack right into the last minute and never out of the game, but unfortunately could not get that early goal back.

The 2nd half was definitely the best Seaforth played all day and they were very unlucky to go down 1-0 and miss out on the finals.

P.S. As we left Gunners won their quarter final convincingly and progressed to the semi-finals... so no disgrace in losing to a team of this quality.

Overall, the boys and parents had a great day, and the team represented the club well. Many didn't realise they were playing the top club teams from other districts and they were definitely one of the strongest of the local teams in the Cup. Expect the Seaforth teams to do well in the district U9 Gala Day and for a strong showing from next year's U10/1s... the future of the club is in good hands!

Well done boys and thanks to our coach Joe Van Leeuwen.

Take That Tape

Take That Tape

As footballers we often use electrical tape to keep our boots tight, hold shin pads in place and to support injuries.
This tape is not biodegradable.

Did you know if you leave your used tape behind after a game, it becomes an issue for the environment?
The grass is cut and the tape is sliced into small pieces and then washed into the creeks and lagoons.
It slowly poisons the water and can kill fish as well as birds.

So don't leave your used tape behind!

For more information call Warringah Council's Environmental Education team on 9942 2543.

Vanuatu Football Boot Collection

help the kids in Vanuatu - give your old boots
Dear Football Supporter
As you would be aware I have been collecting footy boots to send to East Timor and Vanuatu for 8 years now. Unfortunately the collection this year has been the poorest on record (less than 100 pairs of boots).

Given that we have over 17,000 registered players in Manly Warringah I would think that at least half of them bought new boots this year. So where are those 8,500 pairs of boots?

Please deliver* (see details below) any good quality and clean boots, shin pads, shirts and sox, the club will then deliver them to Global Self Storage at Clearview Place, Brookvale. Cisco Systems Australia, the computer people, are picking up the tab for sending the gear to Vanuatu.

This is a small ask which will bring enormous joy to hundreds of kids who could never afford to buy footy boots.

Thanks for your support.
Brian Dunphy

*NB:There will be a box placed under the table that the results sheets etc are kept where the gear can be placed on Saturday and Sunday.

Can everybody see if they can help in some way.

ID Cards

There are new rules this season for checking ID Cards. Managers (Comp), please make yourself aware of this rule, MWFA have already commenced policing last weekend at the FA Cup games at Cromer. Rule for checking the ID Cards

Rules for checking the ID Cards

Before the commencement of every game the ID card of each player must be checked using the following procedure:

1)       At the designated match time both teams shall line up in the middle of the pitch with the referee.

2)       Each team manager or designated official will check each name on the referees card against the name on the I.D. card, and the players appearance against the photo on the card, as well as the division in which the player is registered, to establish the players eligibility to play in the match.

3)       After completion of this process the manager either:

If completely satisfied with the eligibility of the players listed on the referees card, must sign the card in

the space marked "IDENTITY" under the column listing the opponents team. Such signature shall

indicate the managers conviction of the eligibility to play in the match concerned.

or

If not completely satisfied as to the eligibility of any player listed, the manager shall print "STA" (subject

to adjudication) in the space marked "IDENTITY" instead of signing it. The game must then be played

and the result recorded in the usual way. The P.& D. Committee shall adjudicate on the eligibility of any

player.

A players name appearing on the Referees Card is equivalent to the players actually playing in the game, whether or not he takes the field or is present at the game.

The registered age group and division of any borrowed players must be marked on the card. Refer also to Section D of these Playing Rules dealing with substitutes and borrowed players.

The referee shall witness the checking process (without being responsible for it) and may not start the match until these formalities have been completed. Should teams be tardy in carrying out these formalities, the referee must shorten the match time to the extent that the teams may have delayed its commencement.

If a team refuses to complete the ID check as specified in (b) the referees card must be marked STA (Subject to Adjudication) in the space marked IDENTITY, instead of signing it. The game shall be played and the result recorded in the usual way.

Players that arrive late cannot take the field until their ID card has been checked by the opposition manager. The opposition manager must make a note of the players name and at the half time break or at the end of the game, ensure the player was on the match card.

If a player who arrives late does not pass the ID check and the signature for Identity has already been completed, the signature for Identity must be crossed out and STA substituted in its place.

Should an ID Card not be available for an individual player, the player shall not be eligible to take the field in any game. The only exception is where the lack of ID card has been notified to the Association Secretary prior to the match, and permission to play is granted in writing by the Association Secretary. Where such permission in writing has been granted, the player must present this correspondence to the opposing team manager before the start of the match.

Any player who plays without an ID card shall incur an automatic penalty as per H5. The penalty for playing without an ID card but having the name entered correctly on the referees card shall be one (1) game and the penalty for a currently registered player playing under an assumed name shall be four (4) games. For other ID card and player registration offences the EC shall determine the punishment.

If a team is guilty of not producing ID cards before the commencement of the game, the referees card must be marked STA in the space marked IDENTITY, instead of signing it. The game shall be played and the result recorded in the usual way.

Any team guilty of fielding an ineligible player shall be penalised as follows:

1.       If the team wins the match it shall be regarded as a forfeit to the opposition

2.       If the team loses the match, the match shall be regarded as a forfeit unless the score was greater than 5-0 in which case the original score shall hold. If the game is a league game the team shall also lose three competition points.

3.       A team guilty of fielding an ineligible player shall be penalised as above for each match in which the ineligible player played.

Teams failing to carry out the checking of player ID in the manner required within this byelaw will incur a penalty of one match point for each instance in which the procedure was not followed.

Any team manager who signs a referees card indicating that he has identified all players thereon as eligible, which is subsequently found to be incorrect, will render his club liable to a fine of $50.00 at the discretion of the E.C.

If a referees card is marked STA (Subject to Adjudication) by a manager, the Secretary of the Association must be notified in writing by letter, fax or email as per 15.9 (1) by the Club raising the dispute, within 48 hours.

Specialist Goalkeeping Training

SPECIALIST
GOALKEEPING
TRAINING

Goalkeeping training will be conducted from 5.00pm - 7.00pm at Seaforth Oval every Wednesday afternoon (except during school holidays) commencing Wednesday 2nd April 2008.

There will be 2 time slots available to cater for different age groups and abilities.
U8 - U10: training will be from 5pm - 6pm.
U11 and up: training will be from 5.45pm - 7pm.

This will be conducted by ex-Australian goalkeeper, Vicki Cerny. Vicki has her Level 2 coaching certificate with Soccer NSW and has a wealth of experience in the area of goalkeeping.

As you all know, it is impossible for coaches to conduct specific training for the goalkeeper within a normal training session - so don't miss this golden opportunity. Those keepers who have experienced training with Vicki in the past will no doubt be champing at the bit to participate. See you there.

If you have any queries - please call Sharon Egger on
0421 475 840.

This initiative is being funded by Seaforth F.C. - let's support it.
