AGM Report
Seaforth Football Club recently held its AGM for 2006. The meeting was held at Wakehurst Golf Club and was attended by members of the SFC and Committee members. The AGM report was presented, with reports from the President, Treasurer, Ladies Coordinator, Results Officer and Coaching Director.
There were three new additions to the Committee, Linda Wright is the new Treasurer, Natalie Huston takes on the role of Senior Ladies Coordinator and Denise McCarthy is the Assistant gear steward Sub Junior. We welcome these members and look forward to working with them in 2007.
The club again finds itself in a very sound position right across the board.
On a personal note it was sad to see Robert Carollo step down as treasurer but due to his heavy work commitments he was unable to continue. I would on behalf of the Seaforth Football Club like to thank Rob for his continual committment and support.
Highlight of the meeting was the acceptance of Daniel (Legs) Trevor as a life member of Seaforth Football Club - see below. I'm sure that along with myself everybody would like to congratulate Daniel on his great contribution to the Club over many years.
I would like to thank everybody that has supported the Club in 2006 and look forward to another great year in 2007.
DANIEL (LEGS) TREVOR AWARDED LIFE MEMBERSHIP It gives me great pleasure to announce that at the 2006 Annual General Meeting, Daniel (Legs) Trevor was awarded Life Membership of the Seaforth Football Club.
Daniel has been an outstanding member of the SFC for many years. Over the last 11 years he has held the positions of President, Secretary, Age Coordinator, Web Master.
He has for the last 11 years continually coached both of his sons Adam and Joel's teams with the highlight being his sons Joel's teams participation in this years Grand Final.
Daniel has also been a great servant on the field as well, playing continually from 1966 to be interrupted for one year only due to a broken leg. He is currently manager of the 035/1 team and has managed every team he has played in.
Daniel epitomises the spirit and hard work that has gone into making Seaforth Football Club the club that it is today. His nomination was truly supported by everybody at the meeting.

The students currently walk 25kms a day to reach the nearest school. The building of a school in the local area will encourage students to complete their education and hence have a better opportunity of breaking the poverty cycle.

Over 35/2 Season Report
A new league, a new team, a new year, another challenge... 2006!
With the loss of a number of players prior to our campaign this year our main task was to survive and do our best.
No-one expected anything this year and after losing 3 of our first 5 games no-one was saying anything different, try telling that to the Over 35/2’s, these guys don’t know the meaning of giving up...
If there is something left to play for these lads will get there, the signing up of a few players is always going to lift a team, and raise we did to levels even Qantas couldn’t reach, or were we aiming too high?
I don’t think so, the ability and skill was always there, it was the self-belief that was missing, when, we as a team discovered that we could match it with anyone and get results, we did just that, get the results we needed to reach the semis, after that it was fate... and a grand final appearance we were worthy of!
I can sum the season up simply by saying I am proud of each and every player who played their part throughout the season, be it for 10minutes or 90, everyone done their bit, right to the last kick of the last game.
To win 8 draw 1 and lose 1 in the business end of the season speaks for itself, throw the World Cup, holidays, injuries, families and other commitments into those 10 weeks get to the end of it and walk away ‘GRAND FINAL WINNERS’ says it all...
Thank you all again for being part of it and making my job as manager easy...ish !!!

Ladies Finals
A great day for Seaforth on Sunday 27th August.
From the 13 Competetive teams in Ladies, we had 10 get into top four and one eliminated on For & Against. The 9 teams then went on to Semi Finals and 7 teams got through. This justifies our grading system and also the level of coaching skills/education Sharon is bringing to the Club.
I was not able to view all the games due to time conflicts, so here is a brief summary of the Finals:-
LA 12/2B - Scraped thru' on tenacity and steady results thru' the season. Played an oversized and bigger opponent. Once again Mosman able to field Div 2 teams but no Div 1 teams. Mosman's power gave them a 1 goal lead, but Seaforth spirit soon had them on backfoot and a few raids went unrewarded. Both teams went at it for the full 60 minutes, but the early goal stuck. Mosman won 1 nil.
LA 12/3 - Digby's doers. A great game with Seaforth peppering the Avalon goal early. It then went belly up somehow as Avalon seized the initiative and hammered Seaforth goal area. Great goalkeeping kept the scores Nil all. There must have been some nervous coach and managers as they entered the field for stage 2. A very tight half, however Seaforth determination won thru' and a great goal to Seaforth and a looooong wait for the Final whistle saw Seaforth win 1 nil.
LA 14/1 - What a game. The skill level was as high as I have ever seen and how Seaforth aren't the Champions will always be a mystery. From one end to the other, the passing, control, tackling was Premier League quality. Seaforth was the best team and I had to leave at half time with Seaforth clearly the better team. Soccer can be cruel and I was shocked to hear that Beacon Hill, who are also an exceptional team, had prevailed 1 Nil.
LA16/2 - a game I missed due to other games. Two very good teams at each other hammer and tongs for 60 odd minutes. No one could get that elusive goal in time or extra time. Result - Joint Premiers. A great foundation for our 16's and 18's next year.
LA18/2 - we was "done over" again by another Club's abuse of the rules. Despite the emails from MWFA stating the "spirit of the game regarding subs". Forest Killarney turned up with three LA 16/1 players as subs. These girls were good and were the difference, We went down 5-1 but not disgraced. Some teams can live with their decisions, but I couldn't.
LA 4 - ALL STARS. The original team with a core group of 5 have now put in 10 years. One is now a Matilda, so the gene pool is good. What a game. Came from 4th, knocked of the leaders and played 2nd in the Final. A tough game, from one end to the other. After 110 minutes we had seen two goals from Avalon disallowed, two sitters from Seaforth pushed wide and an Avalon penalty right in the box was saved. We went to penalties. Having the hindsight of having a loss in a previous shoot out (2000), we sorted ourselves very quickly, got girls focussed and then put 4 in the net whilst Avalon were subjected to 3 of the best saves ever. Result - WIN on penalties.
LA2 - I didn't get to see much of this game, but what I saw was pretty impressive. For the Ladies to go 3 nil against quality opposition was pretty special. To see them passing and heading was truly brilliant. They played with an intensity that sat Manly Vale on their backsides and reinforces that you can't ever take a Seaforth team as beaten. Well done Sharon and the Ladies.
There we have it, 4 Gold Medals, and a damn good effort from Coaches, Managers and Players. A Special thanks to our tireless Committee members who turned up early Sundays to help Dave and I do nets, canteen etc. Impossible to have done it without your support and good to know we contributed a few thousand canteen dollars.
Cheers

AL & O35s Compulsory Referees Course
COMPULSORY REFEREES COURSE FOR ALL PLAYERS ATTENTION ALL PLAYERS - men's AL 3 & Reserves, 4, 5 6, 7, 8 Over 35/2, 3, 4, 5.
You must supply a minimum of two official referees to register as a team in 2007.
To help players become a registered referee, the MWFA, in conjunction with the referees association (MWRFA), will hold two one-day "Entry Level Referee Courses" (Grade 4) at Cromer Park on:
Sunday 24 September 2006 - 10am - 5pm
Saturday 7 October 2006 - 10am - 5pm
The course concludes with a multi-choice answer exam. After qualifying you will be asked to referee a match in 2007 either prior to or after your own home game.
This move will ensure ALL games are refereed from next season - the only answer was a compulsory course for all players.
Ku-ring-gai Association has over 500 referees and covers every match in their association by virtue of the same process.
What’s in it for me? Players who qualify as referees under this program will be supplied with a referee’s uniform and PAID for the matches you officiate. You can do more games and get paid too.
What happens if I was a referee but just play now? You will have to do the refresher course as well to get your registration back.
How do I register? Contact the MWFA office on 9982 6228 or email: admin@mwfa.com.au and give your name, Club and team and what day you wish to do the course. THE COURSE IS FREE OF CHARGE
REMEMBER- NO REFEREES – NO TEAM- NO GAME IN 2007

Grand Final Reports
Below are match reports received for Seaforth FC sides involved in Grand final matches:
Seaforth 15/2 Pansies V Pittwater
GRAND FINAL
SEAFORTH PANSIES 1 PITTWATER 1
at Cromer Park Sat 2nd September 2006
From Pansies to Premiers After extra time, Seaforth U15/2 were crowned joint premiers in a 1 all draw with Pittwater.
The Pansies, as the boys called themselves were graded in division 3 at the commencement of the season. But after 5 matches, undefeated with an average of 6 goals a match the association decided to grade the teams again and the Pansies found themselves up in division 2.
After a defeat at the hands of Pittwater in their first division 2 match some questioned the wisdom of playing up. On a very wet Saturday at Careel Bay the Pansies came up against the competition leaders, Avalon, the runaway leaders in division 2. The boys soon showed they had remarkable spirit. On wet ground with the rain pelting down the Pansies refused to give up despite twice being behind on the scoreboard and drew the game 3 all.
As luck would have it, Seaforth came up against Avalon again in the semi final and won a tough and pulsating contest with a goal in extra time.
Last Saturday lived up to its forecast. Twenty six degrees was hot for early September and too hot to play football. Pittwater scored early off a free kick from outside the penalty area which soared above everyone into the back of the net.
Despite the heat, Seaforth continually pressed and harassed the Pittwater defense which refused to wilt. With only 3 minutes to go a great through ball saw Seaforth attack the Pittwater goal one last time to score.
Before extra time commenced, Pittwater ran off the field for refreshments and words of wisdom from their coach whereas Seaforth stayed on the ground in a huddle, without their coach, gaining strength from each other showing they wanted to win more than the opposition.
With a fantastic display of skill and determination combined with a never say die attitude and a willingness to support their teammates that surprised parents, the coaching team and most importantly the opposition, the Pansies and Pittwater finished extra time tied at nil all.
Congratulations... Pansies!!

Seaforth Ladies 12/3 Champs V Avalon
GRAND FINAL
SEAFORTH CHAMPS 1 AVALON 0
at Cromer Park 27th August 2006
Avalon came down to Cromer prepared for battle, and challenged the Champs in a way they'd not experienced all year.
I don't think anyone would have been surprised if Avalon had snatched this grand final, because they played really well, but superb defence, unbelievable goal-keeping and a brilliantly-taken opportunity late in the game won the day for the mighty Champs.
Seaforth started more positively, and forced three early corners, but solid scrambling defence from the Avalon ladies kept the Champs at bay. We might have scored but just couldn't convert half-chances into goals.
Suddenly it was Avalon's turn, and a lightning-fast raid almost paid dividends. Rachael Ewing-Flynn found herself alone in the goal, Avalon hard on attack: the first shot was parried away, and then she had to dive in spectacular fashion to deny the Reds a goal.
Now the Champs were under siege, and a new Avalon attack brought another superb save from Rachael. The halftime whistle couldn't come soon enough, because Avalon seemed to be growing in confidence.
The Champs came out firing after the break, & started to impose some early authority, but Avalon came powering back. Once again they laid siege to our goal & Rachael had to make a dramatic diving save to her left. Two Avalon corners were scrambled away, but the Champs were right under the pump. Could we hold on?
Suddenly, almost from nothing, came the turning point. The Champs finally cleared it downfield, and the girls pushed forward. The ball was taken into the Avalon box, then cleared; in again, and cleared again, but Annalise had drifted up and found herself in the middle of the pitch about 30 metres out from goal. A lovely long, powerful ball fell deep in the square, and somehow the Avalon goalie had three Seaforth attackers right on top of her and no help in sight. One shot was blocked, and the goalie appeared to have it covered, but Brigette swooped, took the ball from the Avalon fingertips and speared it into the back of the net. A really good, gritty goal that energised the team and the spectators.
There were still 10 minutes to go, and Avalon refused to lie down. More pressure was exerted, minutes seemed to take forever, and wave after wave of red jersies threatened a late equaliser, but finally the whistle went and our young ladies had completed a most remarkable season, giving supercoach Digby his first grand final success in many, many years of football.
Thanks for a great year, Digby: you certainly brought out the best in our girls. And thanks, too, to the parents, the grandparents, the siblings and the Seaforth club itself, because this club has a lovely "feel" about it. It's a family club, and it was terrific to see so many happy faces at the end. Well done, ladies.
For the record, we won 15 of our 16 games for the year (four were lost to the rain), and the Champs scored 62 goals while conceding only four. The last time we conceded a goal was way back on May 21st against Wakehurst when the Champs won 2-1 at home.

Young Matildas Squad for Russia
Edwards names World Championship squad
Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards has announced his squad that will represent Australia at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship to be held in Russia later this month.
The team will be captained by Sally Shipard who is one of seven players with senior national team experience. Canberra-based Shipard, who already has 26 senior caps to her name at the age of 18, will be joined by vice-captains Collette McCallum and Kylie Ledbrook, plus Leah Blayney and Lydia Williams, all of whom were in the Qantas Matildas squad that qualified for the 2007 FIFA Women´s World Cup in Adelaide last month. Queensland defensive duo Kim Carroll and Clare Polkinghorne also have experience with the senior team.
The age limit for the 2006 edition of the tournament has been increased from 19 to 20 with an U-17 Women´s World Cup scheduled to be introduced in 2008. Eleven players are backing up from the previous tournament held in Thailand two years ago, including Shipard, McCallum, Ledbrook, Blayney, Carroll, Alison Logue, Caitlin Cooper, Jenna Tristram, Danielle Brogan, Nicole Somi and Leena Khamis.
We have some good depth in a number of positions so it was a difficult squad to select and there are undoubtedly a number of players that were unlucky to miss out on selection,’ says Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards.
There is a lot of experience in the squad with a number of players having already represented Australia at senior level which is a great benefit, not only in playing terms, but also in assisting in the development of the more junior members of the squad.
The team have had a good preparation for the tournament and have spent a significant time together through regular camps.
The team also had a rigorous qualifying campaign which has been one of the great benefits of the move to Asia. The results achieved against some of the best nations in Asia have helped greatly with the team´s self-belief.
Much like the Socceroos the team believes in it´s abilities, though at this level, and in such a competitive group, it can just be the bounce of the ball that can ultimately decide a match.
The Qantas Young Matildas squad for the FIFA U-20 Women´s World Championship is:
Goalkeepers
Lydia Williams (current home city Canberra), Alison Logue (Newcastle), Kate Stewart (Hervey Bay)
The Qantas Young Matildas became the first Australian team to qualify for a World Championship via an Asian qualifying tournament when they defeated Japan in a play-off for third in Malaysia in April. China and DPR (North) Korea will be the other teams representing Asia in Russia.
Australia have been dealt a tough draw after being matched with South American champions Brazil, European champions and host nation Russia, plus Oceania champions New Zealand in Group A of the 16-nation tournament.
Match Schedule
Australia v New Zealand, Petrovsky Stadium, St Petersburg
17 August, 4pm (10pm EST)
Australia v Brazil, Petrovsky Stadium, St Petersburg
20 August, 4pm (10pm EST)
Australia v Russia, Torpedo Stadium, Moscow
23 August, 4pm (10pm EST)
Australia´s match against New Zealand in St Petersburg on August 17 will be the first of the tournament although the other Group A match later that evening between Russia and Brazil is considered the official opening match of the tournament. Three days later Australia will meet Brazil, also in St Petersburg, before moving to Moscow for the final group match against Russia on August 23. The final will be played in Moscow on September 3.
Meanwhile, three Australian match officials have been appointed to the tournament including referee Tammy Ogston, plus assistant referees Airlie Keen and Jacqueline Leleu.

Latest SFC Newsletter + Soccer Post
The latest editions of the SFC Newsletter & 'Soccer Post' are now available on the website.
At this stage of the season we have 25 teams in the top 4 of their tables. A fantastic achievement by all players & their coaching staff.
Well done to all teams & keep it going!
Below is a list of the sides & their current standing:
During the first week of the school holidays, Seaforth FC hosted two soccer camps whcih were conducted by Coerver Oceania (Soccer NSW). Initially, there was only going to be one held, but due to the incredible demand for places, another camp was scheduled in the afternoon and this camp also booked out very quickly resulting in a number of players having to be turned away.
We apologise for this, but as the school holiday camps have only been running at Seaforth over the last few months, we did not expect the high number of players who wanted to attend. This will be rectified in the future.
Whilst we were a little unlucky with the weather, the camps were a great success with over 200 players attending the whole week. We have had some great feedback and look forward to seeing the results of the camp showing in our players increased skill and success in their games at the weekend.
Thanks very much to all concerned in making these camps a success inlcuding of course Oscar Gonzalez, Coerver Oceania Director, our age co-ordinators, team managers and coaches and of course the parents and players.

Ups & downs of the Socceroos
Millions of Australians now know what hundreds of millions worldwide believe - football is a lot like life. Sometimes it's beautiful. Sometimes life sucks.
For all the courage and endeavour they've shown, the respect and kudos they've earned, the new friends and fans they've made with their fantastic performances at the World Cup, the Socceroos also depart Germany as proof of what an unfair place the world can be.
When they arrived, few expected the Socceroos to get where they were on Monday - a split-second away from extra-time that probably would have seen them through to the last eight at the expense of a three-time world champion.
Yet the players did. They really believed they could go much further - the penalty that wasn't against Italy robbed them of the chance to ever find out.
Master coach Guus Hiddink had laid the groundwork brilliantly. Three carefully selected friendlies, nearly three weeks of intensive physical training to make them the fittest team in the tournament, and successfully harnessing a work ethic, never-say-die attitude and brotherhood possessed by few sporting teams.
Hiddink also drew on the fact Australia had not been to the World Cup finals for 32 years. The world - and every one of your countrymen and women - will be watching, he said. So go sit them all on their backside, and make them fall in love with you.
From their opening 20 minutes against Japan, it was clear this team wasn't the novelty act of swagmen and Crocodile Dundees the world expected.
Every Socceroo hugged every other before the game. Words were exchanged. Then they went out and played composed, creative, committed possession football. The type the world's elite play, rather than the panicked, crash-and-bash of Socceroos old.
A shocking refereeing decision - and wouldn't that become a recurring theme - left them an undeserved goal down against Japan. They rode the cusp of elimination until the final six minutes. Two Tim Cahill goals and a John Aloisi strike later and Socceroos fever had a grip.
World champion Brazil was next. The hip-swivelling samba kings versus the hip and shoulder Aussies, said critics who viewed the Socceroos as a physical team. But in Munich the world realised Australians could play football. Led by player of the tournament Lucas Neill, the Socceroos danced toe-to-toe with Brazil.
The only time Australia got out of step was in front of goal - and every time they tripped over German referee Markus Merk, blowing his whistle and wielding cards like a loose cannon on the dance floor gyrating to his own beat. Merk hammered the Socceroos mercilessly as they lost 2-0.
Now for Croatia in Stuttgart. A goalkeeping error from Zeljko Kalac had the Socceroos again on the verge of bowing out. Up bobbed Harry Kewell, riding Australia's wave of fitness and fighting spirit to make it 2-2.
Croatia's Aussie-born Joe Simunic and English ref Graham Poll played their own game of yellow-card poker. Simunic kept rugby-tackling Aussies and raising the stakes, Poll kept giving him cards, seemingly unable to grasp amid the high drama unfolding that one plus one plus one is actually three.
Luckily, it mattered little and Australia eventually was on its way to the elite round of the World Cup. Fifteen thousand joyous Aussies in the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion banged their heads to AC-DC's You Shook Me All Night Long long after the final whistle - millions more at home celebrated just as wildly having seen something historic, dramatic, and quite extraordinary.
More was to come against Italy in the round of 16.
Harry Kewell on crutches with gout, of all things. Italy down to 10 men for 40 minutes and defending bravely. Australia unable to break them down, the game bound for extra-time. Another refereeing atrocity as Italy's Fabio Grosso tumbled over Socceroo Neill.
Spanish ref Luiz Medina Cantalejo pointed to the penalty spot and the Socceroos to the exit door. It was over. A nation transfixed wept.
Football - a sport with such slender margins - is like no other. It can leave you breathless, render you speechless. It can elate you, frustrate you, deflate you, bring every emotion to the surface and beyond.
The Socceroos have done it all to us in the past 15 days - four more compelling episodes of sporting drama back-to-back you may never see. They now have the potential to galvanise Australia regularly like our cricketers.
In the world's eyes now, Australia is a respected football nation. The Socceroos have plenty of work to do to become a Brazil, Germany, Argentina or Italy. But they are many steps closer than two weeks ago.
And so are we, to becoming a nation which truly embraces the real football like the rest of the world, thanks to one of Australia's finest and most memorable sporting performances.
The following games have been cancelled this weekend:
u/7 Seaforth Bears, u/7 Seaforth Pythons, u/8 White Tigers, u/7 Soccerettes,

Latest SFC Newsletter
The latest SFC Newsletter is now hot off the presses and available for download.
A slice of sporting history from the Socceroos' FIFA World Cup qualification match at Telstra Stadium will be auctioned to raise funds for the next generation of Australia's World Cup footballers.
The penalty spot where Australia's World Cup dream became a reality, along with one of the original match balls used in the unforgettable qualifier against Uruguay, will be auctioned with proceeds going to the Johnny Warren Football Foundation.
Socceroo John Aloisi, whose successful penalty kick clinched Australia's shootout victory, launched the Johnny Warren penalty spot charitable auction at Telstra Stadium.
The penalty spot, preserved and encased in glass with one of the three original match balls used last November, is a rare sporting artefact commemorating one of the nation's greatest sporting moments.
Australians who wish to bid on this piece of sporting history can visit www.eBay.com.au/charity to register their interest from today. The auction opens on Monday 29 May and will close on Thursday 8 June.
The winning bid will be announced on the SBS World Cup Show (7pm) and www.eBay.com.au on Thursday 8 June.
Speaking at Telstra Stadium, John Aloisi said he was honored to contribute to the work of the Johnny Warren Football Foundation.
"The World Cup qualification at Telstra Stadium last November was the night that changed everything for Australian football," said Aloisi.
"Like all football people, I was sorry Johnny Warren wasn't here to witness the moment he'd dreamed about and worked hard to achieve.
"Now I'm delighted to launch the auction because it will help to continue the work that Johnny started so many years ago."
SBS Head of Sport, Les Murray, said the network as the official Australian broadcaster of the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 was delighted the auction proceeds would fund grassroots development.
"Qualifying for the World Cup is a milestone for Australia as a football nation, but as Johnny Warren said so many times it's not the end of the quest, just the beginning," said Les Murray.
"In June and July thousands of young Australian footballers will watch the FIFA World Cup on SBS and go out into the parks to mimic the world's best. That's why we're supporting the Johnny Warren Football Foundation and this auction. It's all about developing our next generation to play the beautiful game as Johnny loved it."
The penalty spot and match ball will be on public display at Telstra Stadium before being part of a Powerhouse Museum football exhibition from Monday 5 June. The Powerhouse exhibition, 'The World Cup dream: stories of Australia's soccer mums and dads', explores the influence of migration on Australia's football culture; a theme Johnny Warren took up in his best-selling autobiography 'Sheilas, Wogs & Poofters'.
The Johnny Warren Football Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is "achieving Johnny Warren's dream of an Australian team winning the football World Cup".
The Foundation funds coaching and development programs for talented junior football players across Sydney and regional NSW.
Johnny's nephew and Foundation board member, Jamie Warren, said the Johnny Warren penalty spot auction would directly assist the next generation of Australian footballers.
"Johnny had a great belief that Aussie players could be as good as or better than the world's best footballers if they were given all the right opportunities," said Jamie.
"At a young age that means expert coaching and encouragement to play with the skill and flair of the world's best from South America, Europe, Africa and beyond.
"The funds from the auction will go towards this mission. I'm sure there are many companies and individuals who'll be bidding, not just to own this amazing memorabilia, but to support Johnny's dream."
The Johnny Warren penalty spot auction is a collaborative effort between the Johnny Warren Football Foundation, SBS Television, Telstra Stadium, eBay Australia and Grand Slam International.
The auction will be verified by eBay trading assistant GoingGone, helping charities raise money on eBay.
Powerhouse Museum will include the penalty spot & match ball in the exhibition, 'The World Cup dream: stories of Australia's soccer mums and dads', from Monday 5 June.
TO BID ON THE JOHNNY WARREN PENALTY SPOT AUCTION 1. Go to www.eBay.com.au and register as an eBay member. Registering is free.
2. Click on the Johnny Warren Penalty Spot Auction link on the Charity homepage: www.eBay.com.au/charity, read the description, terms and conditions and payment options and place your bid.
3. Enter your maximum bid. eBay will continue to bid automatically on your behalf until the maximum amount you have nominated is reached.

International Football Film Festival
Shoot goals - shoot movies!
International Football Film Festival
Chauvel Cinema (Oatley/Oxford St, Paddington)
19 - 21 May 2006
For the first time since 1974 Australia will take part in the Football World Cup Finals in Germany. This is reason enough for the Goethe-Institut Sydney to stage the first ever International Football
If you thought the world’s favourite game was just about 11 men (or women) chasing a ball – think again: The drama unfolds on the lawn and behind the scenes!
The Dutch opening film "The Other Final" (2003) takes viewers to a play-off between the teams of Bhutan and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. Both teams take up the bottom places in the FIFA team rankings, but the passion there is as heated as it is at the official final of the 2002 World Cup taking place at the very same time.
"Liberated Zone" (Germany 2002) explores the role of football in a small town community and shows that football has the potential to overcome racial prejudice. "Fever Pitch" (UK 1999, presented by the British Council) is a romantic comedy about the love affair between a man, a woman and a football team, based on Nick Hornsby’s autobiographical novel. "Depth of Field" (Germany 2004) equally explores the complicated relationship between the myth-like passion for the team and its players and love in real life. "Le Ballon d’Or" (Guinea 1993) and "Fimpen" (Sweden 1973) are fascinating stories about the liberating force of football in the lives of two young boys.
"Boleiros" (Brazil 1998) and "Peladão" (Germany 2005) take the audience to the home of the World Cup favourite: Meet old football stars revelling in their glorious past and beauty queens in the jungle outback providing the perfect backdrop to the world’s largest – but still widely unknown – football tournament in the Brazilian city of Manaus.
A short film compilation rendering the title to the entire Festival "Shoot goals - Shoot Movies" was commissioned by the Talent Campus of the Berlin International Film Festival: Here young film makers from 28 countries take a very light-hearted approach to football.
Also in the program: Football short films produced by the Australian Film Television and Radio School for SBS Television.
The Football Film Festival is part of a comprehensive season of football related events organised by the Goethe-Institut Sydney in preparation for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
The Festival will be opened by Les Murray, head of SBS sports on May 19 at 6:00 pm. Tickets are available from 4 May via www.mca-tix.com or 1 300 306 776.
Red blooded football fans will do anything for hottest ticket around
It's not a blood sport, but Aussie football fans will do almost anything for a
World Cup ticket - they're even prepared to give blood for it.
As the anticipation mounts, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service today
revealed any one who attends a donor centre to give blood during May and
June will have the chance to win a trip to Germany to see the World Cup Final
and three nights accommodation, courtesy of Emirates.
And it doesn't stop there. Five runners up will receive the next best thing to
being there - a 42" Fujitsu plasma television to catch all the World Cup action.
There is no catch to this once in a lifetime opportunity - all you need to do is attend a donor to give blood during May and June and tell us why you decided to be a
'special' Australian.
It's the Australian Red Cross Blood Service way of saying thank you for helping to
save the lives of thousands of Australians every day.
Former Socceroo and Fox Sports Commentator, Robbie Slater, said, "A chance to go
to Germany for the World Cup is an awesome opportunity. As your body keeps
discarding and replenishing blood all the time whether you give blood or not - you
may as well put that 'spare' blood to good use. It could be your ticket to the World
Cup."
Operation Lifeblood is the Australian Red Cross Blood Service's largest national new
donor recruitment campaign designed to encourage 45,000 new donors to give blood
throughout May, June and July.

Coerver School Holiday Camp
The Coerver School Holiday camp held at Seaforth Oval in the first week of the holidays was a major success. We had approximately 100 players attend and a great time was had by all.
Matt Osman from the Central Coast Mariners came to visit the camp and was interviewed by the players. Some very important topics were covered, such as "What type of car do you drive?". Another lovely child pointed out quite gleefully that the Mariners lost to Sydney FC in the grand final - a comment that Matt handled very gallantly.
The feedback from players and parents has been fantastic and given the success of the camp, Coerver have decided to hold another camp in the July school holidays.
Keep checking our website for more info - or just ask your manager. If you would like to discuss any aspects of the camp, you can give me a call on 0421 475840.

Dream come true
NORTH Balgowlah teenager Olivia Kennedy still wakes up every morning pinching herself.
In the space of five months she has gone from being a fringe player with potential to a mainstay of Australia's Young Matildas soccer team. Her amazing dream became even more surreal last week when the Young Matildas qualified for the FIFA under-20 Women's World Championship finals to be played in Russia.
"It's been a crazy ride," the 18-year-old defender said. I have enjoyed every bit of it. "To go from not even being in the squad to going to the World Cup is unbelievable."
But to achieve the feat the Young Matildas had to come through an agonising play-off with Japan. The Australians were behind twice before winning 3-2. It's the first time an Australian team has won through to qualify for a FIFA World Championship event through the Asian Football Confederation.
And Kennedy says her team now deserve to be respected by the game's superpowers. "This a big thing for women's football in Australia," she said. "I don't think other countries took us seriously before when we were going through Oceania. But to go through Asia and beat China along the way proves we deserve to be there. We are a strong, competitive team and we are improving all the time. The big countries need to respect us now".
Kennedy, a strong-tackling defender, now believes the Young Matildas have the potential to make an impact at the third edition of the tournament. "Anything is possible," said Kennedy. "We've been working very hard at our training camps and getting more experience. There was a lot of pressure on us to qualify but we came through. Going up against big teams like the USA and Germany doesn't worry us.'
But before getting the chance to play those superpowers, Australia must qualify through a tough pool in which they are pitted against Brazil, Russia and trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand. The tournament begins on August 17.
19th April 2006
Young Matildas Seal 3rd Place Australia beat Japan 3-2 to secure third place in the AFC Under-19 Women's Championship at Kuala Lumpur Cheras Stadium on Tuesday. The victory ensures that Australia would join China PR and Korea DPR in the world finals this August in Russia.
Japan, who topped Group A and looked to be one of the best teams in the tournament, failed to make an impact when they needed to, allowing the Aussies to twice fight back. The Japanese led 1-0 and then 2-1 before Australia, making their debut in an AFC finals, applied the killer blows.
For Australian coach Alistair Edwards, it was a bittersweet victory. "While I’m very happy for Australia, I am also sad for the Japanese team because, in my view, Japan has been the best team in this tournament." Edwards, however, said Australia will do their best to fly the flag for Asia in Russia.
"We have qualified for the finals twice before as a member of the Oceania federation," said Edwards. But this time we are going as an Asian team and I can tell you that our players are proud to represent Asia in this competition and we will do our best for the continent."
Japanese coach Morinao Imaizumi suffered his second successive disappointment after his team were beaten by China PR in a penalty shootout in Saturday's semi-finals. "It was a tough match because Australia are a very strong team," said Imaizumi. "Both sides showed some great skills. My players did their best but there was something lacking in their performances. We have to go back and analyse what we did wrong and hopefully come back stronger for the next tournament."
Japan took the lead on 10 minutes when midfielder Mizuho Sakaguchi put the ball in the Australian net. The Aussies fought back and equalised only eight minutes later when Leena Khamis dribbled uncontested into the Japanese box before beating goalkeeper Shiori Kobayashi.
The Japanese then restored their lead with one of the best goals of the tournament. A clever backheel from Sakaguchi sent the Aussie defence the wrong way and allowed Yumi Uetsuji to fire in a brilliant cross. Yuki Nagasai applied the finishing touch with an excellent diving header.
The Australians, however, again refused to give up and substitute Jenna Tristam equalised with 15 minutes left. Collette McCallum scored the winner for the Aussies with a goal three minutes from full-time.

Young Matildas lose Semi Final 4-2
The Qantas Young Matildas have been beaten 4-2 by DPR Korea in their semi final of the AFC U-19 Women´s Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They will now face Japan in the 3rd/4th play-off, with the winner of that game to also gain a berth at the FIFA U-20 Women´s World Championship in Russia later this year.
Australia was always playing catch up in the heavy conditions, with DPR Korea scoring twice in the opening 15 minutes, although Sasha McDonnell pulled a goal back before the break. DPR made it 3-1 early in the second half, but Sally Shipard brought it back to 3-2 with 10 minutes remaining. It was all Australia in the closing stages, but DPR hit on the break and made it 4-2 right on full time to advance to the final.
The match started late due to the late finish of the first semi final, which went all the way to penalties, with China advancing 5-3. It also started in a torrential downpour and DPR Korea took full advantage early.
After 6 minutes, Australian goalkeeper Lydia Williams was unable to hold a low skimming shot and the rebound fell nicely for S.H. Kim and she struck her shot home from close range. Kim added a second goal after 15 minutes when she slid in to guide the ball home after a good cross in behind the Aussie defence. 2-0 down and a mountain to climb.
But climb back they did, as first Sasha McDonnell tested the DPR Korea on 22 minutes with a chip and then Servet Uzunlar had a shot tipped onto the crossbar a minute later. Collette McCallum shaved the post from a free kick and Shipard had a 20-metre effort well saved by the keeper, as Australia started to dominate.
That dominance was rewarded in the 40th minute, when the impressive McDonnell pounced on a rebound from the DPR Keeper, who failed to hold onto McCallum´s free kick. Olivia Kennedy almost made it level before the break, when stole the ball off the DPR defence and shot from an acute angle, the ball striking the post and just eluding McDonnell in front of goal.
Australia was looking to continue the momentum at the end of the first half at the start of the second half, but seven minutes in Ra scored with a diving header to give DPR a 3-1 run lead, against the run of play.
From then on it was pretty much Australia with all the possession, with DPR content to sit on the lead and stall at every opportunity. Shipard and substitute Caitlin Cooper went just wide with shots, while McCallum had a one-on-one opportunity saved by the keeper.
The DPR keeper then made another great save to deny McDonnell, but the pressure finally told in the 81st minute, when a brilliant team move was finished off by Shipard from 10 metres, to set up a grandstand finish.
Try as they might, the Aussies couldn´t find a way past the DPR keeper and in the last minute, DPR sealed the win with a rare foray forward in the second half, with Ra making no mistake from 10 metres.
A disappointed Alistair Edwards lamented the poor start, but said their was still a lot of positives to come out of the performance. "We conceded two early goals during the torrential downpour and after that we played our way back into the game really well," said Edwards. "Sasha (McDonnell) was electrifying upfront and caused them all sorts of problems."
"We had our chances to win the game hitting the woodwork three times as well as not taking three our four other chances that we would usually have converted." Not taking anything away from DPR Korea, they took their chances well, but we are all disappointed that we let this one slip. This is the first time that we have tasted defeat since our campaign started last year and although we could have done a few things a lot better tonight we will take a lot of positives out of the game."
"These type of tough competitive games is what being a part of the AFC is all about."
They now face a tough match to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women´s World Cup finals against Japan, who like Australia finished top of their group and were surprisingly beaten in their semi final by China. The game will kick-off at 5.00pm on Tuesday April 18 in Kuala Lumpur.

Young Matildas finish top of Group
The Qantas Young Matildas have finished on top of Group B at the AFC U-19 Women's Championship after a comfortable 7-0 win over Jordan tonight.
After a delayed start to the game due to lightning near the ground, it didn't take long for the girls to gain ascendancy when it started with Caitlin Cooper scoring two goals inside the first 20 minutes. Amy Jackson and Kylie Ledbrook added a further two goals to make 4-0 at the break. Sasha McDonnell, Renee Cartwright and an own goal made it 7-0 at full time.
They will now play DPR Korea in the semi finals on Saturday at 9.45pm AEST, with the winner earning a berth at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship in Russia later this year.
After dominating possession early, Australia finally broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, when the Jordan defence failed to clear a cross from Olivia Kennedy, the ball falling invitingly for Cooper who drove her shot from the edge of the area. Kylie Ledbrook thought she had scored Australia's second goal in the 15th minute when her corner kick sailed inside the far post, but the goal was ruled out by the referee.
Two minutes later though it was 2-0 when another corner, saw a scramble ensue and Cooper was on hand to stab home. Amy Jackson made it three in the 32nd minute when she headed home a Leah Blayney cross and four minutes later Ledbrook struck home a free kick from outside the box for a 4-0 half time lead.
Half time substitute Sasha McDonnell made it 5-0 when she crashed home a shot from the corner of the six-yard box. Renee Cartwright added a sixth goal in the 61st minute, when she ran on to the ball for a simple tap in after a neat dummy by McDonnell. The scoring was wrapped up by an own goal in the 72nd minute, although the Jordanian keeper did well to keep at least more Australian goal bound efforts late in the game.
Alistair Edwards praised the girls efforts, especially as complacency could have set in, with the team already qualified for the semi finals.
"Having already qualified for the semi final it was again encouraging to see the players put in another solid, high tempo performance to top the group against a defensive-minded Jordan," said a delighted Edwards. "We have a fully fit squad to choose from against DPR Korea and having used the whole squad during the group games everyone is looking fresh and focused for the big game on Saturday."

QANTAS YOUNG MATILDAS QUALIFY FOR ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS WITH RECORD WIN
The Qantas Young Matildas have ensured qualification for the semi finals stages of the AFC Women’s U-19 Championship following a 16-0 thrashing of host nation Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur overnight.
The victory also sees the team a step closer to qualification for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship with the top three teams from the eight nation tournament to represent Asia in Russia later this year. Australia are now strong favourites to top Group B with the final group match against Jordan to be played tomorrow evening.
Australia held a six goal margin by half time and went on to score a further ten unanswered goals as the home team tired in the humid conditions.
Both Jenna Tristram and half time substitute Kylie Ledbrook scored four goals apiece, while Victoria Balomenos secured a hat-trick. There were doubles also for Collette McCallum and Servet Uzunlar with Leah Blayney rounding out the scoring.
The result was the biggest scoreline for the Qantas Young Matildas since the inception of the team in 2002.
Coach Alistair Edwards had made nine changes from the starting line-up which defeated China on Sunday with only McCallum and Blayney backing up.
"Some of the football played today was sheer class," said Edwards. "Having made nine changes from the opening game against China the performance of the team was quite tremendous and all 20 players have now had a taste of the action and they all have done exceptionally well."
"Playing in hot and humid conditions, it takes a lot out of the players, so we made a lot of changes. And I think the result, and indeed the performance, shows that we have strength in depth. "Having qualified for the semi final our next objective is to finish top of our group. The players' performances over the past two games have made my job of selecting the starting eleven for the next game a very difficult task."
In the other Group B match played overnight China easily accounted for Jordan with a 9-0 win.
Should Australia maintain top position in the group the likely semi final opponent will be the winner of tomorrow's final Group A match between defending champions Korea Republic and DPR Korea.

Great start for Young Matildas
The Qantas Young Matildas have commenced the AFC Women's U-19 Championship in fine style with a 1-0 win over pre-tournament favourites China in Kuala Lumpur overnight.
The Qantas Young Matildas are aiming to become the first Australian side to win an AFC Championship, while a top-three finish in the eight nation tournament will ensure qualification for the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women´s World Championship to be played in Russia in September.
Queensland striker Sasha McDonnell had the distinction of being Australia's first male or female player to score in the finals of an AFC competition when she converted a Collette McCallum cross from close range nine minutes after the interval.
While the Chinese twice struck the frame of the goal later in the half, it was to prove their only threat to the goal of Australia's Lydia Williams and the Qantas Young Matildas ran out deserved winners in a match played in high humidity.
Australia took its time to get into the match after early pressure from China, but it was McDonnell that had the first decent effort after 21 minutes. She was found by McCallum at the far post, here header forcing a great save from the Chinese keeper. Right on half time and with Australia dominating, McCallum was denied by the keeper this time, who tipped her long range shot over the bar.
The breakthrough came in the 54th minute, when a patient build up by Australia, saw McCallum get in behind the defence and she crossed to McDonnell who raced onto the ball and crashed home her shot from 6 yards out.
A minute later, China were almost level when a fierce shot hit the post and with Williams the rebound was put wide. Williams could thank the wood work again in the final ten minutes, when a cross-cum-shot from the left hit the top of the crossbar. Leena Khamis could have sealed the win in the 86th minute, when she had a one-on-one with the keeper, but her shot was blocked and McCallum had the chance to shoot but was again foiled by the keeper.
Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards was obviously delighted with the team performance and to get a first up win over a very good side.
"It was a match of high quality which we controlled for lengthy periods having possession for at least 70% of the match," said Edwards. "We scored a well-worked goal and defended exceptionally well throughout the match. It was really pleasing to see the aspects of our game that we have been concentrating on during our preparation, work so well against such high quality opposition. The quality of the teams here is extremely high with the players fully aware of the tough games that lie ahead, and we will undoubtedly need to continue to improve on the form we displayed today."
"This thoroughly deserved win has further instilled the belief that we are on the right track but there is still a lot of work to do."
In the other Group B match played overnight Jordan defeated Australia's next opponent Malaysia 2-1.

Offside Interpretation & Clarification
We have received the following interpretation for the new offside law from Richard Lorenc, National Refereeing Manager, FFA:
In most offside situations the 'old' rule will still apply i.e. where only one attacking player clearly goes for the ball from an offside position, the player is deemed offside. If the referee uses the 'wait and see' approach for this player to touch the ball, then the defending team will be disadvantaged. The indirect free kick is taken from where the offside player was situated when the ball was played and not from where he touches it as the new law suggests.
The new interpretation of 'wait and see' will generally apply when 2 or more attacking players (some onside, some offside) go for the ball at the same time. Should any of these players going for the ball be clearly onside, the referee will confirm who touches the ball first before either ruling offside or playing on. If the onside player touches the ball first, play continues regardless of offside positions of his team mates.
Should an offside player touch the ball first, he will be deemed to be offside regardless of the player alongside being onside. The indirect free kick will be taken from where the ball was touched.

Kennedy off to Malaysia
Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards has announced his squad that will compete in next month's AFC Women's U-19 Championship in Malaysia with the top three teams in the tournament to represent Asia at the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship to be played in Russia in September.
Qantas Matildas midfielder Leah Blayney returns to the squad from the USA where she has been studying and competing in college football at Auburn University. The team will again be lead by a trio of players with significant senior team experience in captain Sally Shipard and vice-captains Kylie Ledbrook and Collette McCallum. Goalkeeper Lydia Williams and defender Kim Carroll have also represented the Qantas Matildas taking the total number of players with senior team experience to six.
"The AFC Women's U-19 Championship is going to be a significant challenge for all competing nations with five matches over ten days in what will be humid conditions," said Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards.
"Whilst we are expecting plenty of tough matches I couldn't be happier with the preparation for the squad. The monthly camps have really enabled the squad to gel together extremely well both on and off the park and our results have been encouraging.
"Our overriding objective from day one has been to simply focus and work towards becoming better at what we do as a team as well as individually. On the whole I am really pleased with how the players have responded.
"We are playing some great football and a number of players are showing definite signs of progressing to the senior team to add to the six that have already appeared for the Qantas Matildas."
The Qantas Matildas squad for the AFC Championship in Malaysia is:
Goalkeepers:
Lydia Williams (ACT), Alison Logue (NNSW)
Forwards:
Jenna Tristram (NNSW), Sasha McDonnell (QLD), Leena Khamis (NSW)
The Qantas Young Matildas qualified for the eight-nation Asian Championship following victories over Thailand and Myanmar earlier this month and have been drawn into Group B alongside China, Jordan and host-nation Malaysia. Group A contains Korea Republic, DPR Korea, Japan and India.
The top two teams in each group to progress to the semi finals with the two finalists, plus the winner of the 3rd place match, to qualify for the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship.
The squad will be in camp in Canberra from April 1 before departing for Malaysia four days later.

Young Matildas qualify for AFC U19 Women's C'ship
The Qantas Young Matildas have qualified for the AFC U19 Women's Championship in Malaysia next month, after a convincing 6-0 win over Myanmar at the Supachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday night.
A hat-trick from Kylie Ledbrook was the highlight with Servat Uzunlar grabbing a double and Sasha McDonnell a single goal.
Played in high humidity, Australia dominated from the start with Myanmar content to sit deep and let Australia come at them. It wasn't long before Australia capitalised on their dominance, Ledbrook grabbing the first goal after just 14 minutes. Clare Polkinghorne's long ball in behind the defence was met by Ledbrook at the far post and she angled her shot back across goal and inside the far post.
McDonnell doubled Australia's lead in the 34th minute, racing onto a great ball from Ledbrook and beating the Myanmar keeper from 10 yards out. Collette McCallum almost made it 3-0 before half time, with her fierce strike from outside of the box, tipped onto the crossbar by the Myanmar keeper.
The second half was more of the same, with Australia creating a host of chances but failing to convert. The eventual third goal came with 20 minutes remaining, when Uzunlar pounced on the loose ball from a scramble that had developed, after McCallum's drive from outside of the area, hit the crossbar and rebounded back into play.
Ledbrook added her second goal in the 78th minute with a good solo effort, carrying the ball some 30 metres, before unleashing a shot from the edge of the area that gave the keeper no chance. She completed her hat-trick in the 85th minute, curling a free kick into the top left corner from 20 metres.
Uzunlar wrapped up the impressive win three minutes later, beating several defenders at the top of the penalty box and hitting a low shot that again gave the keeper no chance of saving.
Coach Alistair Edwards was pleased with the win, but acknowledged more needs to be done in time for the AFC Championships. “We controlled the game from the start to finish,” said a happy Edwards. “Myanmar presented a different challenge to Thailand, and the players adapted very well. “We've played four games in the last 2 weeks (2 games v NZ, plus these two qualifiers), and scored 19 goals for and 3 goals against. The improvement in the team in this time has been very pleasing. Our results have been good, but we know that we've still got some work to do before the AFC Championships in Malaysia.”
Match Details:
Australia 6 (Kylie Ledbrook 14'/78'/85', Sasha McDonnell 34', Servat Uzunlar 70'/88')
Myanmar 0
Edwards will keep the girls in Thailand for several more days, for extra training in the humid conditions, in preparation for the same conditions when it plays at the finals in Malaysia next month.
Five of the squad have returned to Australia early, to join up with the Qantas Matildas, who are in camp in Canberra.
Soccer NSW will be promoting fair play throughout the football community in 2006 with the promotion of the Sports Rage and Play By The Rules programs. The Sports Rage prevention program is the flagship of the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation in its approach to reducing and preventing sports rage both on and off the field.
In 2004, the Blacktown Soccer Association conducted a sport rage prevention pilot for football targeting the parents, coaches, referees and club administrators of U/9, U/10 and U/11 teams.
The Play By The Rules program promotes fair play and respect for officials and others involved in the sport. The web based program provides clubs, associations, officials, coaches, managers, players and parents with up-to-date information and training on fair play, harrassment, child protection, member protection and other aspects of harassment free sport. Participants who undertake the on-line training test receive a certificate when they reach the pass level.

Young Matildas beat Thailand 6-2
The Qantas Young Matildas have commenced their FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship campaign in confident style recording a convincing 6-2 victory over Thailand in Bangkok on Sunday night.
Queensland striker Sasha McDonnell scored twice, while Kim Carroll, Jenna Tristram, Caitlin Cooper and Leena Khamis all scored one goal apiece.
Although Australia largely dominated the match which was played played in high humidity, it took two late goals to increase the winning margin after Australia had led 3-2 with ten minutes remaining and 3-1 at half time. The goal tally could have been increased even further with Collette McCallum hitting the woodwork and Sally Shipard seeing her penalty saved.
"For our first game in AFC competition it was a great result against difficult opposition and under challenging conditions," said Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards. "What was also pleasing aside from the winning margin, is that this performance provides a platform for the team to improve even further. The team is improving each time we take the field, and we hope to carry this form into our next match on Tuesday against what is an unknown opponent for us (Myanmar)."
Australia pressed from the start of the match with their reward coming in the 14th minute, after a succession of corners. From the third corner, a scramble developed and the ball fell for Carroll six yards out and she was able to volley home.
However a miscued back-pass by Carroll six minutes later, finished with Thailand equalizing and it stayed that for another 20 minutes. Australia continued to dominate and went ahead in the 40th minute, when Tristram neatly tucked home a cross by Clare Polkinghorne. Right on half time, McDonnell tapped in from close range after good lead up play by Collette McCallum and Kylie Ledbrook.
The second half started much the same as the first, but they were unable to make the most of opportunities that were created. The best of these chances was in the 69th minute when McCallum hit the post from a free kick and from the rebound Cooper headed over the bar.
Thailand pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute and this seemed to spur the girls with McDonnell fouled in the penalty box three minutes later. However Sally Shipard's spot kick was brilliantly turned around the post by the Thai keeper.
Australia though continued to press and when Cooper cracked an unstoppable shot from outside the penalty box, the game was as good as won. The score blew out in injury time with McDonnell grabbing a second goal and then Leena Khamis lunged to tap home a free kick right on full time.
Should Australia defeat Myanmar today, the team will progress to the AFC U-20 Women's Championship to be played in Malaysia in April 8-18.
The top three Asian teams will qualify for the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship to be played in Russia in September.

Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards has announced a 20-strong squad for next week's world championship preliminary qualifying tournament in Thailand. Australia will meet Myanmar and host nation Thailand with the winner of three team group to progress to the AFC u-20 Women's Championship to be played in Malaysia in April.
All players selected featured in the squad that convincingly defeated New Zealand earlier this month.
The Qantas Young Matildas have been in camp on a number of occasions in the past six months but to date have only played three international matches - the two-game series against New Zealand and a one-off match against the senior Chinese team in December which ended in a scoreless draw.
"The squad has been working really well both on and off the park though we are all very mindful of the fact that qualification through the AFC will be a significant challenge," said Qantas Young Matildas coach Alistair Edwards.
"Our preparation has been good, in particular drawing with the senior Chinese team and our recent success against New Zealand has instilled self belief in the players and our team ethos. All the players are ready for the challenge and are looking forward to performing on the park."
The Qantas Young Matildas squad is:
Goalkeepers:
Lydia Williams (ACT), Alison Logue (NNSW), Kate Stewart (QLD)
Forwards:
Jenna Tristram (NNSW), Sasha McDonnell (QLD), Leena Khamis (NSW)
A trio of Qantas Matildas will lead the team with Sally Shipard named captain and both Collette McCallum and Kylie Ledbrook vice-captains. Goalkeeper Lydia Williams and defender Kim Carroll have also played for Australia at senior level.

Kennedy & Young Matildas face New Zealand
The Qantas Young Matildas (u-20s) will play two matches against New Zealand in Canberra next week as the team continues preparations for next month’s Asian qualifying tournament in Singapore.
The Qantas Young Matildas will play the two matches at the Australian Institute of Sport on Wednesday 15 February and Friday 17 February as part of a 5-day camp. New Zealand are currently preparing for the Oceania qualifying tournament to be played in Samoa in April.
”These matches will provide further opportunities for the players to test themselves both individually and as a team against international opposition,” said coach Alistair Edwards. ”With the qualifiers just around the corner it will be another chance to gain further international experience and will also be an indicator as to how the team has progressed since our last international in December against China.”
The match against the Chinese senior team which finished in a scoreless draw is the only international match played by the Qantas Young Matildas in the current campaign.
The 23-strong squad for the camp and matches will feature five players that have represented Australia at senior level – goalkeeper Lydia Williams, defender Kim Carroll plus midfielders Sally Shipard, Kylie Ledbrook and Collette McCallum. The squad is:
Goalkeepers: Lydia Williams (ACT), Alison Logue (NNSW), Kate Stewart (QLD)
Defenders: Clare Polkinghorne (QLD), Kim Carroll (QLD), Nicole Somi (ACT), Danielle Brogan (NSW), Grace Gill (ACT), Olivia Kennedy (NSW)
Midfielders: Sally Shipard (NSW), Kylie Ledbrook (NSW), Collette McCallum (WA), Amy Jackson (VIC), Servet Uzunlar (NSW), Renee Cartwright (NSW), Caitlin Cooper (NSW), Elizabeth Kermode (NNSW), Briony Holcombe (NSW), Alannah Reed (QLD), Vicki Balomenos (SA)

Fijian adventure for Seaforth lads
A GROUP of boys from the Seaforth FC enjoyed their first taste of international competition when they took part in the 11th Fiji Football Association youth tournament in Lautoka. The Seaforth under-15 team was one of four Australian sides invited to the annual 10-team tournament.
The round-robin tournament was played in sweltering heat, making conditions hard for flowing football. While the youngsters were unable to progress to the final stages of the competition, the main objective of the trip was to understand the Fijian culture and help with the development of football in the Pacific Island nation.
"A lot of our kids hadn't been overseas before but this trip was more about developing Fijian football," Seaforth coach Peter Sate said.
"The Fijian kids joined in our training sessions and we gave them boots and balls.
To see the way our kids got on with theirs was the highlight."
The Seaforth team was Chris Anderson, Sam Steindl, Andrew Sate, Jack Hambling, Harley Woolven, Adam Olsen, Dan Previtera, Alex Previtera, Elliott Whittle, David Beckingham, John Gough, Mitch Wright, Tim McIlwraith, Tom Gergich, Martin Tokarczyk, Bill Anderson (manager) and Peter Sate (coach).

Olivia Kennedy joins Young Matildas squad
SOCCEROOS vice-captain Lucas Neill might be the peninsula's highest-profile footballer but young Olivia Kennedy could be about to make her own mark. The 17-year-old & ex-Seaforth FC player was last week named in the women's Australian under-20 squad, the Young Matildas.
"I'm stoked," she said of her selection. It's a massive thing for me."
The North Balgowlah youngster has just spent the past weekend in camp in Canberra under the eye of coach Alistair Edwards. The former Socceroo has been in charge of the side since July and young Olivia has been suitably impressed.
"He's a really good guy," she said. "He knows a lot about football."
And it seems the former Seaforth FC & Manly Warringah Dolphin player has impressed her new coach just as much. "Olivia has been sensational," Edwards said. "She's gone from a fringe player five months ago to basically the first 11. "She has a fantastic attitude and a great work ethic and deserves to be making her international debut."
Squad members are preparing for the World Youth Championship qualifiers at the beginning of next year. It's the first time the young Australian girls will have to qualify through Asia and Olivia admitted it was going to be a difficult assignment.
"It's the first time it's going to be really tough to qualify because it has been easy through Oceania," she admitted. "It means everyone is really focused and we're determined to get through."
The Young Matildas will face a huge test of their credentials this Thursday when they take on the fully fledged Chinese national team on the Central Coast. "It's scary but exciting at the same time," Olivia said of taking on the world's ninth-ranked team.
While qualifying for the World Youth Championships is at the forefront of her mind, Olivia admits her ultimate goal is to progress on to the senior team. "It would be awesome but I know it's a big step up," she said.
At Seaforth F.C. we are continually planning for and considering ways of improving the manner in which we evaluate our players for selection into teams and divisions.
With a responsibility to place approximately 350 players (plus the addition of grading the ever-growing Ladies Divisions for the first time) into teams and divisions each year, a considerable commitment is made by our club to promote fairness, consistency and transparency in the selection process. As you can imagine, an enormous amount of time, planning and effort is put into this process by the player assessment committee, and as per every other facet of the Seaforth F.C., it is all voluntary. If you do have a query following your child's assessment, please try and bear the following information in mind. To assist with any questions that you may have, attached is a brief outline of the methods and processes used to select our players in the junior teams (U9 to U16). See attachment for additional information pertaining to U9 age group.
Eligibility
Any player wishing to attend selection trials must be registered with Seaforth F.C. for the 2005 season. Due to insurance purposes, there will be no exceptions made.
Player Assessments Towards the end of each season, we distribute Player Assessment sheets to all our U8 to U16 coaches asking for an appraisal of the players' performance during that season. These assessments appraise and define a broad range of each player's skills and are expressed against the grade they are playing at the time. This is obviously different for U8 players, as they are not graded until U9.
Prior to the selection trials each year, U9 and U10 (2004)* assessments are considered and summarised. Based on the above, and factors such as the age, division and level previously played, groups of players of compatible ability and development (where possible) are formed for the selection trials. Subject to age, groupings for the trials generally range from between 30 to 40 players. These players are then placed in 4 to 6 groups. These groups in no way reflect or guarantee a player's selection in a certain team.. Each group is then drawn to play against groups of a similar standard at the selection trials.
*Please note U11 to U16 (2004) usually have less numbers for us to appraise and consequently groups are made up as evenly as possible in order to make them competitive.
Selection Trials Our club's selection trials are generally held the week after the bulk of registrations is completed, usually in early February each year. At the selection trials, new players to our club are evaluated by placing them, with groups of players of similar experience and ability. An age group selection panel then considers a player's performance at the selections trials.
Age Group Selection Trials Prior to selection trials, individual age group selection panels are formed. These panels are formed based on nominations that we receive from interested persons. Each panel generally comprises of the Coaching Director and age group selectors. These selectors mostly comprise of committee persons and coaches who have a background and experience in that age group. In addition to age group selectors, Seaforth F.C.'s player selection committee has two level 2 and two level 1 qualified coaches.
In the interest of obtaining a broad overview of players' standards in a specific age group, selectors will be able to assess all players of that age group over the course of the selection trials and if possible the preceding season.
At the conclusion of the trials, the player assessment committee then place players into draft teams.
Following confirmation of all registrations and the total number of players in each age group, final team compositions and a recommended division are determined. These teams and the division requested are then submitted for the approval of the Manly Warringah Soccer Association (MWSA).
The final decision with respect to the division of a team e.g. Division 1,2 or 3 etc. is made by the MWSA.
Queries Like any other club or sport we naturally receive queries from parents and players in relation to team selections and grading. In order to provide an open selection process, we are always willing to hear from senior players, who are available to help with the selection process at our club. If a player is keen to be involved in the player assessment process, they must be prepared to make themselves available for all time slots pertaining to the age group they would like to assist with.
If you have any questions, require further information or are keen to assist, please feel free to contact Sharon Egger on 0421 475 840.
Information pertaining to U9 (U8 2003) player assessments & selection trials. As mentioned previously, up until the age of U9 players are not graded, they generally start playing at the age of 6 and continue with that same team until the end of the U8 season. We quite often get queries from parents who question why grading and player assessments have to occur so young as they feel that their child is not ready or doesn't want to play in a more competitive environment. They would also like their child to continue playing with the friends they have played with for the last 3 years. These comments are very valid, and we acknowledge them, however, there are other factors that have to be taken into account.
The first is that whether we at Seaforth F.C. want to grade our players or not is not up to us, it is a decision made by the MWSA. Although fully graded the U9 age players do not know whether they are playing in Division 1,2 or 10, therefore the Divisions in U9 are entitled red, blue and yellow/green. No emphasis is put on divisions i.e. no competition tables are kept and no point scores or results are recorded by the MWSA. At the end of the season there are no finals or winners - the season culminates in a Gala Day held at Cromer Park.
By the time players get to the end of the U8 season, in most teams, it is possible to see that some players are developing faster than others and some players are struggling to keep up with their team mates. By placing players with others that are of a similar standard, we ensure that players do not stand out as either more or less advanced, and hence help prevent players lose interest or experience a loss of self confidence and possible low self esteem.
We quite often get requests from parents who tell us that their child wants to play with their best friend and visa versa. The problem arises when two best friends are a very different standard and to grade the lower player up is unfair on them as well as the remainder of the team. In our experience, whilst it may appear difficult to 'start all over again', it can be a very positive experience in that your child will be playing with players the same standard as them, and be playing against players of a similar standard. Not to mention the new friends that are made, some of which become life-long.
Special requests Unlike the U6-U8 teams it is very difficult to comply with requests for a player to be placed in a specific team or with certain other players. However, Seaforth F.C. does wish to help wherever possible and, for example, if we have say an U10 Division 6 and an U10 Division 7 it can sometimes be possible for players in those teams to be placed together in one team or the other.
It is not possible for two players to play together in Division 1 if one of the players is not of the Division 1 standard. Please note that we have a duty to the M.W.S.A. to position players and teams according to ability in order to make all divisions competitive.
In the U9 age group, the players move up to play on a ¾ size field and there are 9 players on the field as opposed to 6 players in the sub juniors (U6-U8). Generally there are 11-12 players allocated to each team. The change in team numbers also dictates teams from U8s have to be changed. Due to the size of our club, we generally have 2 teams allocated to the red division, 2 teams in the blue division, and the remainder of the teams in the yellow/green divisions.
Goalkeeping Goalkeeping trials will also be held for those who specifically wish to trial solely for that position.

Reports - Inter Milan Coaching Clinic
Below are a couple of reports about the highly successful Inter Milan Coaching Clinic:
I hope that everybody has had a great Xmas and New year. I have just returned from a month at Lemon Tree Passage (Port Stephens) & as some of you are aware I have been in contact with some of you for various reasons in starting the 2006 season. But now it will start to move along with preparations for Rego and Player Assessments well under way.
The first thing I did on return (although I think I was supposed to unpack) was to visit the final session of the Milan camps. From all reports the camp was a huge success (it did have its mandatory hiccups), although it was almost a disaster when bad weather hit Sydney and we were very fortunate to be able to use the Manly Vale Bowling / Calabria Club in our hour of need.
It was very pleasing to see so many players from Seaforth and also a lot of young ladies present. It is really incredible to see so many talented kids running around. This camp would not have been the success it was without the incredible dedication and time and effort put in by Robert and Cathy - they were just incredible and our thanks goes out to them. I'm sure Rob will really cherish the memories and enjoy going back into his comfortable black chair and air conditioned office today. While Cathy is at Marconi this week with the camp. Once again, thanks Guys for a great effort. Also thanks to Gina Carollo and Joe George.
- Many thanks to all involved, Richard Wright
I just wanted to reiterate Richard's comments concerning the success of the 2 day Seaforth FC/Inter Milan camp held last week. I was fortunate enough to have the camp in essence shifted to Passmore & the Club's outdoor weather courts, which was great for the younger children and for this we are indebted to Pat Barbalace, my brother in law and Director of the Club for his contribution and both Ray's Pizzas and Armando the club manager for all their help over the 2 days.
In short, there is no doubt about the quality of coaching that came with both the camp's organisers (ASCC) and the Inter Milan entourage. It was refreshing to see what qualified and expert youth academy coaches can bring to us soccer or football fanatics in such a short time and hope in the future that my contacts established over the last 7 days are significant for the future development of youth football, both on the peninsula and elsewhere.
Make no bones about this event - it took a great deal of hard work and commitment and goes back to April last year, where Gina and the boys attended the Melbourne Camp and made the initial contact with Garry Mallechan & Simon Oliver from ASCC. The hard work and dedication of both Cathy and Gina was invaluable as we not only prepared and managed the camp over the 2 days but also entertained the 12 man Inter Milan & ASCC coaches entourage from their arrival on Wednesday night all the way through to Saturday night, where we were guests of ASCC and Marconi in readiness for the Marconi Camp which commenced yesterday. Although this was not compulsory it was a goodwill gesture on both Cathy & Gina's part, given their short time in Sydney which ends this Wednesday. Organising the camp during a Xmas break was hard enough in itself and we should thank them for their effort. By the way, both are at Marconi today assisting ASCC.
A special thanks to Joe George who assisted as a coach during the 2 days, taking time off work and I know he found the event invaluable as he heads into the 2006 season.
- Well done and thanks again, Robert A. Carollo

Football Federation Australia together with the Australian Sports Commission and Telstra, today officially launched the new sports initiative ‘Telstra Football Anytime´. Aimed at getting Australian boys and girls between the ages of six and 12 to get fit and have fun, the new football program encourages participation in the game outside of the constraints of structured competition football.
The official launch was marked by a press conference in Melbourne´s Federation Square with Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, Minister for the Arts and Sport, Telstra Group Managing Director, Consumer & Marketing, Mr. David Moffatt and CEO, Football Federation Australia Mr. John O´Neill, AO, Four current and former Qantas Socceroos also attended the inaugural event, to take part in a five-a-side football match with local school children.
The Telstra Football Anytime program gives children the opportunity to get involved in Australia´s number one sport and learn new skills in a safe and friendly environment,’ Football Federation Australia´s John O´Neill said today.
It´s a six session program which will be run by FFA accredited coaches in community hubs and schools nationally. However, this is not about moulding footballers of the future; it is about letting kids have fun and get fit by playing football anytime, anywhere and with anyone.
As we grow this program we will aim to establish centres in locations where there are fewer opportunities to participate in football. It is also a key goal of this program to ensure girls represent 50% of all participants.’
Local youngsters highlighted the versatility of the program alongside their footballing heroes current Socceroo Archie Thompson, Socceroo legend Kevin Muscat, and Young Socceroos Vince Lia and Kristian Sarkies in a five-a-side football match.
Today has been great fun and I think this program is the perfect way for Australian kids to be introduced to the world game. From what I´ve seen of the football equipment and skills based activities it really is for children of any age and ability,’ said Qantas Socceroo Archie Thompson.
Senator the Hon Rod Kemp, Minister for the Arts and Sport, also showed his support.
The Telstra Football Anytime program is an excellent example of a winning partnership between government, sport and the corporate sector to deliver grass roots sporting programs. This new program is a great introduction for children to play a flexible and simplified version of football without the pressures of a formal competition league,’ he said.
For an enrolment cost of just $60, children receive an exclusive set of football equipment which includes a Nike Total 90 all surface football, Nike Brasilia equipment bag, pitch and goal markers and a drink bottle.
Associations, schools and individuals can register their interest in the Telstra Football Anytime program via the website.
Log onto www.footballaustralia.com.au/footballanytime to enrol and receive a set of football equipment. Telstra Football Anytime will be delivered nationally by Football Federation Australia from March 2006. Two special ‘preview´ programs will take place in Sydney during October and November 2005.

New Coaching Book Available
'Coaching Junior Soccer' by Denis Ford
The canteen currently has stock of this coaching book. It is a valuable guide book for parents and coaches of children's soccer teams, particularly those who have little or no knowledge of the game. The first section looks at the role of the coach, providing simple, sensible guidelines for an effective coaching season. Information on how best to teach children is also included, with an emphasis on repetition, praise, constructive criticism and of course, fun.
The second section covers the most important aspects of young player games, including basic skill development, through a series of safe, basic exercises accompanied by easy-to-follow illustrations and diagrams covering everything from simple passes to the safe and correct method for heading a ball.
The final section focuses on training different age groups, putting all the information into practice and, of course, the main objective : helping kids enjoy a healthy, active outdoor game that is fun to play.
This book is highly recommended by both novice and experienced coaches and players.
