Seaforth FC help Indochina Starfish Foundation - UPDATE 28/7

Seaforth FC have donated some of their old playing strips to the Indochina Starfish Foundation.

The Indochina Starfish Foundation is an International Charity founded in 2006. Its key aim is to provide a lifeline for some of the poorest, most disadvantaged children in Cambodia by providing them with the opportunity to complete a full education programme, the opportunity to participate in a weekly youth football coaching programme or, in some cases, both.

The boys in the photo above are actually from Indochina Starfish Foundations school, which is located in the Stung Meanchay community on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. The ISF teams are called The Flying Tigers; these boys are from the grassroots program, which means they are 10 years of age and younger.

The boys are taking part in the inaugural U13s Boys National Football Tournament which will be played throughout July. The competition is being held at the Football Federation of Cambodia ground which is located 25 kms outside of Phnom Penh. The boys have already had success taking the 3 points in their first game of the tournament.

The female coach, Srey Mau, is one of only two females in Cambodia that hold a C licence accredited by The Asian Football Federation. Srey Mau is employed full time by ISF.

World Cup Events for Seaforth FC

WORLD CUP
EVENTS
FOR SEAFORTH FC

It's fantastic that the World Cup, the pinnacle of world football, is just around the corner.

So, to celebrate the tournament of the world's greatest game and also to thank all our players, parents and supporters for all your help and involvement throughout the season, Seaforth FC will be putting on a few events throughout June and July.

To start with we'll kick off a TIPPING COMPETITION now. There will be one entry allowed per Seaforth FC team (yes, U6s up to Premier League) - try and match your knowledge against all the other teams in the club.

First prize will be an official Australian jersey, scarf and cap for every player on the team. Second prize will be a season pass for four for Sydney FC games to share around the team.

An email will arrive with your team manager soon inviting each team to login and start entering your tips. Be in it !

We also hope to be showing Australia's and England's games live at the clubhouse on a big screen. Come and watch it with your mates and scream and shout as loud as you want without having to worry about waking up the next door neighbours!

Numbers will be limited and we haven't finalised all the details but we're certainly trying hard to make this happen.

Here's hoping Australia has a great tournament and June and July are packed full of fabulous football moments.

Seaforth U10/1 'Stormers' - Barry Donnelley Knockout Cup

Barry Donnelley Knockout Cup, May 2010

Magnificent, courage, determination, grit, spirit, never give up attitude, passionate. Words aren't enough to describe the Herculean effort 'our boys' put in to come so near yet so far in this years Barry Donnelley Knockout Cup.

As we began the trek to the West we knew the names of the teams we would play but nothing about them other than a fearsome reputation.

We arrived to the eclectic colours of opposing teams mingling with the excited cries of hundreds of excited young players all straining at the leash. The top teams from three first round games would go through to the 'sudden death' semi finals.

Game 1 - Stormers vs Emu Plains
The first game against Emu Plains soon settled into a pattern with Seaforth 'Stormers' having the balance of play.  Defence was soon turned into attack with confident full backs Joe and Tom feeding the dominant midfielders of Caleb, Fergus, Ben 'Rymaldo' and Ali G 'Gilato' and then on to the speedy wingers of Ben C and Alex R to terrorise the Emu Plains defence.  Crosses were met by speedy Nick F and Josh in the middle with the midfield backing up but despite the chances none seemed to find the back of the net.

Frayed nerves were eased when eventually a typical move saw Joe winning the ball at full back, passing sweetly to Caleb on left wing, Caleb to Ben 'Rymaldo' moving out wide who crossed into the danger area.  The ball broke to Fergus moving through from midfield.  Fergus picked his spot and prodded it towards the bottom right hand corner.

Agonisingly it hit the upright and rolled along the line.  The players seemed mesmerised as the slow motion ball headed towards the other post. The expectant crowd held its breath; surely not another chance could be cleared. As one, the 'Seaforth Faithful' pumped the air with joy (and relief) as the ball eventually nestled inside the opposite side netting!

One nil and Seaforth on a roll! The Seaforth back four marshalled by the dominant pairing of Nic 'Twinkle Toes' and Charlie 'Chilli' in the middle backed by confident goal keeping made any Emu Plains attacks look ordinary.  By the end Stormers could have won by several goals but with the points in the bag it was a great start.

Game 2 - Stormers vs Earlwood
The next game followed a similar pattern with Seaforth dominating but unable to convert the opportunities.  Eventually Josh won the ball on the edge of the Earlwood Wanderers area and powered past their defence.  The goalkeeper came quickly and bravely off his line to dive at the ball only to connect with Josh.  Penalty!

Nerves were on edge as the boys had never practised penalties. Caleb stepped up bravely and with a sweet left boot drilled the unstoppable ball home low into the left hand corner.

As with the first game Stormers were unable to convert any more of the chances but another win put us in a strong position to go through to the next round.

This good news was tempered by the loss of Josh for the rest of the comp. with a recurrence of a knee injury sustained in Saturday's games.  Despite this he hobbled around and insisted he would be ok to play.  The reality was, however, that now we were down to the bare 11 with no subs left!

Game 3 - Stormers vs Moorebank
The final first round game was against Moorebank who had demolished the two teams they had played and scored eight goals in the process.  Moorebank proved to be a strong side and the fluency and chances that Stormers created in the first two games were only few and far between in this.

Despite Moorebanks strength the deadlock was only broken by what looked to be a harsh penalty against Seaforth midway in the first half.  With the game ending 1-0 to Moorebank the boys faced an agonising wait to see if two wins was enough to go through.

When a delegation returned from HQ to say that we had progressed grubby faces lit up and tired limbs were soon forgotten.

Semi Final - Stormers vs Canley Heights
Canley Heights would be our opponents in the semi.  A team with plenty of subs who train four times a week and have played on full size pitches for two years!  We were down to 11!  Clearly, this would be our small bands sternest test 'Once more unto the breach, dear friends'!

Our gallant but tired knights lined up, the hooter sounded; GAME ON.  Canley in blue made their intentions clear from the start.  Skilful in nearly all departments they pressed our boys but as in all the other games confident goalkeeping, a sound defence and midfield supporting the defence and attack stunted all Canley's efforts.

Occasional forays into enemy territory could even have seen us go one up but when half time came honours were still even.

It took a moment of brilliance midway in the second half to break the deadlock.  The Canley centre forward pounced on a ball outside our penalty area, jinked around three defenders and unleashed a rocket of a shot that no one could have stopped.

The relief for Canley was clear to see but still our boys were defiant and dogged.  Only one goal and we would be back.  Tired limbs were now starting to show but with no subs everyone bravely soldiered on.  Ali G was clutching his side, Caleb was floored and hurt his shoulder but both epitomised the team spirit and insisted they stay on.

Eventually the pressure on Seaforth told and Canley forced a corner.  From the corner the ball was quickly cleared but only as far as a blue midfielder on the edge of our box who swung and the ball hit the roof of our net.  Two down but still our boys wouldn't give up.  Another crunching tackle on Chilli saw him fall awkwardly on his injured wrist and join the growing rank of walking wounded so eventually we were down to ten men.

The final hooter sounded, two nil and jubilation for Canley who knew they had been in perhaps the hardest game they had played for a long time.

As our boys trudged and hobbled off the field the effort, highs and lows of the day were etched in every grimey, sweat stained and just a few tear stained faces   Angels no longer, battle weary Trojans they were. They had been so close to the 'glory' final but when they realised just what they had achieved the tears soon dried to be replaced by smiles. Disappointed but not down hearted. Semi finalists, beaten but unbowed. They had run their hearts out and little legs off!  Surely the coach was not alone with a lump in his throat. Our boys had lost to very worthy opposition and the eventual winners, beating Morebank 4-0 in the final.

The organisers should be congratulated on an excellent competition.  Every game from first to last was played in an outstanding spirit, with passion, pride and great determination.  Players, coaches, managers and parents from every team were exemplary ambassadors for the game, supporting their team, applauding good play in every team and accepting every decision by officials and organisers with good grace. This is what sport is all about, I was proud to be part of it and immensely proud of our boys and the part they played in it.

As the sun set on a long day, our boys departed the field with no silverware but with great memories and heads held high. Coach, Manager and parents couldn't have been prouder of what our boys had achieved and how they had 'played the game'.
