Seaforth FC girls give up schoolies for charity

SEAFORTH FC GIRLS GIVE UP SCHOOLIES FOR CHARITY

(NB: Claudia Snell & Astrid Milne – both Seaforth FC girls)

As their classmates flock to the coast for a schoolies week of sunshine and mayhem, Claudia Snell and her friends will celebrate the end of school by helping the less fortunate.

With the ink barely dry on their Higher School Certificate exam papers, 19 graduates from Mosman High School will fly to Cambodia to help build houses for impoverished families in a village outside Phnom Penh. They are part of a growing group of HSC graduates eschewing the traditional Gold Coast knees-up in favour of alternative options.

"We wanted to end our school lives on a good note with something we'd remember, rather than getting trashed," said Claudia, 17.

The Gold Coast remains the leading destination for school leavers. Up to 40,000 students are expected to visit from next weekend. But overseas destinations, notably Fiji, are also growing in popularity. Unleashed Travel will send 2500 students to Fiji on seven-night packages costing more than $2000. Bali and Vanuatu are other popular destinations for some of the 60,000 students on the move.

"It's just schoolies. We only sell to 17 or 18-year-olds so there's no older people or 'toolies' on the island whatsoever," the managing director, Jot Lynas, said. "You can party with people your own age on your own private island for the week and it's the same price as going to the Gold Coast where you can scrap it out with 40,000 other people, fights and drugs.

"We're international so it's very hard to take drugs with you. As soon as they leave the airport we sort them onto buses which take them to the marina where they're put onto boats and out to the islands. There's no opportunities to get hold of drugs."

While they prepared for their exams this year, Mosman High students spent time raising $55,000 for building materials. Working with the Tabitha Foundation, a non-profit organisation which promotes community development in Cambodia, they hope to donate a community well and build 30 houses. They will help Cambodian builders hammer walls and floors for houses sturdy enough to withstand the annual monsoon season.

"At the moment, these families live in houses made from bamboo and palm fronds, so when it rains, they flood," Claudia said. "Hopefully we can improve that."

They settled on Cambodia because some of the students had learned about the atrocities of Pol Pot's regime in modern history classes. Initially, about 50 students were interested in the trip, but enthusiasm waned when the student co-ordinators announced it would replace schoolies week - and that two parents and a teacher would accompany the group.

"Most people don't believe we'd do this instead of schoolies," Claudia said. "They were a bit shocked, but they also gave us a bit of respect. Everyone thinks it's pretty cool. We can go out and party any time. This will be something we'll remember forever."

It is with great pleasure that Seaforth FC announces that our very talented U11 Div1 player Caleb Southee-Sami has been selected to play for Manly United U12 side in season 2012.

U16 Ladies win Champion of Champions

SEAFORTH CLINCH CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TITLE

Manly Warringah Football's Seaforth clinched the 2011 Under 16 Girls title after a hard fought 2-0 victory over Southern Districts Liverpool Olympic at Valentine Sports on what was a humid Sunday afternoon.

Both teams tested each other in the early stages of the match as the heat played a toll on the fluency of the game but it was Seaforth who struck the first goal in the 18th minute. After some fantastic build-up play by Seaforth, striker Kate Geddes home from close range which sent the fans into raptures much to the dismay of Olympic keeper Nika Morozoff.

Rochelle Sharpe almost made it two in the 23rd minute but her effort sizzled over the bar. Olympic needed a spark and almost got it in the 28th minute when Michelle Jugow hit a stunning free-kick from 30-yards but was well saved by Seaforth keeper Sophie Carlberg.

Olympic fans almost had something to celebrate in the 31st when Tiarne Inzitari looped a ferocious shot that looked like it was travelling over Carlberg, but the keeper held her nerve to thwart Liverpool an equaliser. A minute later and Chontelle Kelly tried her luck from the right side of the post but her shot hit the side netting.

The match ended 1-0 at the break to Seaforth as Liverpool Olympic went on the hunt for an equaliser in the second half. Ciara Harding had other ideas though as the Seaforth player got inside the box well but skewed her shot just wide of the box.

It was to be Seaforth's day however as Geddes bagged a second and what a great individual goal it was as she took on two players and slotted home from close range to give her side a 2-0 victory.

FFA JUNIOR LICENCE COACHING COURSE

YOUTH CERT I/11 & LICENCE COURSE

I know that the season is well over for most, and that a number of people are well into their summer sport commitments, but it is also the perfect time to consider Football Coach Education in preparation for next season.

The first is the Junior Licence and is perfect for coaches who have not attended any formal coaching courses and want to learn the basics of football coaching. Lots of smart, simple, relevant information is included in this course, all designed to make coaching more enjoyable.

The second course, the Youth Licence course is for those coaches who have already completed the Junior Licence course and wish to improve on their football coaching credentials. This course is highly recommended for coaches who want to expand on the information gained in the junior licence and are coaching youth players in the 12-15 years age group.

U16.1A Ladies Minor and Major Champions

W16.1 Champions for 2011
Winner MWFA trophy best defensive record

In windy and slippery conditions at Cromer, the Seaforth Women's 16.1A's overcame a spirited Mosman team to claim victory in the 2011 Grand Final, achieving a dream for many of the players who have been runners up in the playoffs for the previous two seasons.

A flowing passing move finished off by Jess Fowler opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes, and a direct 30 yard free kick from Jessie Williams midway through the first half gave us the platform to win the game. The win was tough - Mosman repeatedly denied Seaforth's attack with a solid midfield and strong defence. In the end, however, Seaforth's expansive and structured game was too good, and the girls were thoroughly deserved 2-0 winners.

This capped an extraordinary year for the girls:
:: U16 Champions, winning every game they played
:: Despite missing 5 games to rain, they scored 56 goals and conceded only 1
:: Winning the MWFA trophy for the best defensive record of all teams, the second time this team has achieved this feat in 3 years

The winning squad was:-
Sophie Carlberg, Kate Chiswell, Tahnee Devine, Jess Fowler, Hannah Griffiths,
Ciara Harding, Taylah Jones, Maddie Kilpatrick, Phoebe Layden, Jane Machart,
Alex Miller, Rochelle Sharpe, Rachael Waller, Jessie Williams.

Wish the girls luck in the Champion of Champions competition, starting next month!

U10/4 Scorpions - league champions!

U10/4 SCORPIONS - LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!

They called themselves the Seaforth Scorpions and last Saturday (27 August) showed they certainly possessed a sting in their tail when they were crowned division champions.

The Scorpions finished the regular comp, sharing the top spot with Wakehurst FC and Narrabeen FC on 24 points. The MWFA then organised a play-off between the top six teams. The Scorpions didn't lose a game, defeating both Narrabeen and Wakehurst in the process. The title hung in the balance on Saturday with Seaforth needing a win against Collaroy Cromers Strikers FC to take them past the post.

It was a nailbiter of a game with the Scorpions going down one goal in the first half, despite having 70% of possession and easily half a dozen excellent shots on goal. Supporters' emotions were frayed (to say the least) when what looked like two dead cert goals were thwarted before the half-time whistle.

Ten minutes into the second half and the Scorpions still couldn't get the ball over the line. It was beginning to look like it just wasn't their day. A lesser team would have lost heart but this gutsy little side has a lot of spirit and guided by coach Jason Agapiou from the sidelines they lifted their game even more.

Vocal support from family and friends was electrifying with ear-splitting cheering and yelling as the Scorpions scored not one, but two, blistering goals. (Hopefully, the opposition supporters realised how much was at stake for the Scorpions!) The final whistle saw players and supporters, hoarse, emotional and ecstatic. A truly well-deserved win.

The Scorpions have been encouraged and guided all season by the driving force and dedication of coach Jason Agapiou who has never missed a single game or training session. They're a great bunch of kids who gel really well together and it's been a pleasure turning out to watch them every weekend. A brilliant season, Scorpions!

The team:
Douglas Wilson, Wilf McKie, Callan Brown, Angus Dunn, Heath Van Selm,
Harvey Pratt, William Stanton, Parissa Agapiou, Lachlan Minaca, Tom Rathborne and Andrew Fitzwater.

Seaforth Stormers win WU10 Gala Day

The Seaforth Stormers started their season with an incredible lost 8 to 1 and ended the season with 5 wins, 1 draw and 4 loses. Not bad when you consider ½ the players in the team were first timers to soccer.

We won last Sunday's (14th August) WU10 Gala Day Draw 4, with 14 points, winning 4 games and drawing 1. We scored more goals than any other team on the day.

Our team is guided by an amazing coach Paul Metcalfe, who always arrives at training and the game with a well thought out strategy, game tactics and bundles of enthusiasm. We have a great team song, silly dance routines, nicknames like The Rock, The Gazelles and Princess.

We have girls scoring goals for the first time ever, defenders only wanting to be strikers, Captains flicking coins, we always run onto the field as a team, and now a trophy cabinet even fuller with medals. You've gotta say WU10 Seaforth Stormers had a great season. Go the Stormers!

Thanks to everyone involved. Girls you deserved the Win! The team; Nina Adare, Phoebe Metcalfe, Zoe Crott, Evie Sillar, Ciara and Jasmine Sowden, Charlotte Stuart, Annabelle White, Hannah Jones, Jessica Sleep, Sophie Hadley, Darcie McDermott, Leilahni Kirk, Jemima Dugan.
